Flag of the skies 1 still peerless shine, Through other’s azure vault unfurled* till every lmnd and heart entwine, To swoop oppression from the world. FOR PRESIDENT. MARTIN VAN BUIttN. FOR VICE PRESIDENT. JOHN FORSYTH. Subject to tho decision of a National Convention. DOINGS AT WASHINGTON. Six days of tint first sesslnn of llm Twenty-sixth Congress Irnvo been sulTorcd to pass away, in llm House of Representatives, without oven a prospect that the legitimate busbies* of tliat hmlv will ho soon entered into, or the wants of tho people attended to. Tito gross attempt—the high-hnnd.ul effort to disfranchise n portion of tho citizens of Now Jersey, nnd to sot at nought tho openly ox* pressed will of the majority of tho ponplo of that State, which Governor Penninoton und his pliant Council, have made—shame to say it. has found advocates nnd defenders within tho walls of Con- ■ glass. Yes, tho very fountain of national legisla tion has been tainted and rendered impure by the partisan outbreaks that would justify such uu open invasion of the sovereign rights of the people of New Jersey. Wo are well uwuro (hut the undis guised and unbought suffrage of freemen has over smell rank, nnd was considered unwholesome air for federal nostrils—this Now Jersoy.outrage is n proof of tho fact. There are two ways, it seems of making representatives. The constitutional mode, wo have always understood to he, the result of tho count when the bullet boxes uro opened by the officers proscribed by law. Tltoso having the majority, urn tho bona fide representatives of their constituents, und as such are entitled to nil ilia pri vileges of Members of Congress. Tho federal mode, hoUirotcr, ns exemplified by tho Now Jersey Question, seems to be u mure convenient met bod, Tho minority, being tho most select, or most re spectable portion of tho crowd, are honored with the choice, manure the constitution nnd inws. A Governor, nnd hit Council, allix the “ broad soul” of the Stnto to a Imtch ef certificates—first sup- prating the volet of a largo number of citizens, and, lo, and behold! tho process is over, and six very genteel federal members, by the Promethean blast of tho aforesaid Governor and Council, atu called into existence. Those acquainted with “ Whig" Federal jug gling will not mntvel at those things. Soo tho shameless proceedings ut Harrishurgh, Inst year, when Gov. IIitner, Thaddkus Stevens, C. I). Penrose, &c., endeavoured, in defiance iff tho popular will, to hold on to tho reins of power in Ponnsylvuniii, They wore, ut longtli, of course, dcfuutcl, nod humbled—yet limy nindo a bold stroke, und eviured lltoir total disregard for tho coosti'utiouiil rhhts of the people. Nor is this all. Whilo Mayor Cl.auk enjoyed power in Now York, lie laid a “ Whig" police force, whoso espe cial business it wns to guard the bnll.it boxes, in tho various Wards of tho city—by bullying and intimi dation to drivo tiio honest domocnitio voter from tho polls, and to increase tho “ Whig” vote by every means in tlmir power. To bo sure, the people rose in their might, nnd deprived Mr. Ci.AttK, of that office, which ho prostituted lo pnny purposes, it*, gurdlesg of ilie reelings or diet Whiles of tho whole body of his fellow citizens. And thus, wo trust, will it over be. May tlm dumociotic spirit that (despite of all “Whig" tmimmivres) unimntes tlm people of this country from Maino to Florida- from tlm Atlantic to tho Pacific, never bo suffored to druop! In that spirit exists our sccuiity as u nu- tloi.-onr continuance ns a Republic. * Rut, wlmt will nu iiidigiiuut people sny to those who nre squandering tho public treasure ut Wash ington—merely to support the ascendency of parly —regnrdiess of reason, nnd opposed to justice 7 Mr. Graves, Mr. J. Q. A dams, and other kindred spirits have udded another loaf to tho unenviable reputaiiou which llcy have achieved as servants of tiie people. The want of sympathy of tho latter with our free institutions is loti well known to dilute on nt this time of day—and hi* open alliance with those who would deprive tlm people of their rights shon'.il bo expected. Wo certainly believe that ut a future day, the actors, in lljo scones nt Washington, who deride the voice of the people will receive justice ut their bands—and that universal reprobation will murk llioir mimes. Ono cun scarcely dwell on this humiliating sub ject, without feeling mortified that the demon of party cun so far outstrip tho hounds of reason, ns to convert the Dulls of National Legislation, itt’o n stage for tho display of ruiitipulo nnd fanfaronade. For whut o'so can the House of Representatives, during tho first week of the present session be compared to I Tlm most roascinnblo propositions wore scoutod—the most unquestionable precedents in parliamentary rule, set aside.
