tho City Council of Augusta had purchased Uoth
the upper and lower bridges arras* the Savannah
river countering that town with Hamburg, and tbut
the effect of this measure would be a serious injury,
not only to tho we:fare of Hamburg, but to th- in
terests nf tho Augusta and Hamburg rail road,
and ultimately affect Charleston. Ho clearly elu
cidated the subject by sliowingjh.t mode in which
this would take plnce, in cons- quonce of the vari

to wit: the Savannah nnd Macon, tho Augusta nnd
Alliens, \-c. the completion of which would divert
the trade from Churlo-ton to Savannah, by enabling
the people of Augusta to arrest it« n tho otlior side
of the Savannah river. After his explanation was

the remedy in the Innd* of thn people of this city.

We are grurifii-d at the vote, which, doubtless, would

“ Every Demoi-rni from thn slavelmlding States

the slavehoMing Slate* voted for it, excepting four,

Every Federalist from the non-sluvchoiding State*
