From the “Souvenir” of Alfred De
Musset.
Ihave seen my only love, my heart’s un
changing trust,
Become that spectral thing men shudder
at and fear;
I have seen a living tomb where floated but
the dust
Of our dead love near.
l’es, still beautiful and young, unimagina
bly fair,
I have seen her lifted eyes and eyelids
like the dawn;
Then the smile upon her lips, and the mu
sic in the air,
While a voice chattered on.
But nevermore that voice, and nevermore
that sml.e,
Which the once adored face In its sweet
confusion wod\
And my heart was full of her, fixed in ear
nest gaze the while.
It wandered more and more.
And I would have had the strength to draw
nigh the lovely one,
And to clasp unto my own that empty
bosom cold;
And I would have cried aloud, Ah, faithless,
what hast done
With the heart was thine of old ?
Bat no, it seemed to me that a stranger
passing fair
Had, by chance, assumed that voice, and
had got her star-like eyes;
So I left her mute and cold, like a statue
standing there,
Yea, a statue in the skies.
