After the Sermon.
The minister said last night, said he,
‘Don’t he afraid o’ gi vin’;
If vour life ain’t nothing to other folks,
Why, what’s the use of livin’ ?”
And ttiat’s what 1 say to mv wife, says I,
There’s Brown, that miserable sinner,
He’d sooner a beggar would starve than
give
A cent towards buying a dinner.
I tell you our minister’s prime, he is,
Hut I couldn’t quite determine.
When I heard him a-givin’ it right and left,
Just who was hit by his sermon.
Of course there couldu’t be no mistake
When he talked of long-winded prayin’
For Deters and Johnson they sot and
scowled
At every word he was sayin’.
And the minister he went on to say,
‘There’s various kinds of cheatin’,
And religion’s as good for every day
As it is to bring to meetin’.
I don’t think much of a mau that gives
The Lord Aniens at my preachin’,
And spends his time the followin’ week
in cheatin’ and over-reachin’.’’
I guess that dose was bitter enough
For a man like Jones to swaller;
But I notice he didn’t open his mouth,
Not once, after that, to holler.
Hurrah, says I, for the minister—
Of course I sat! it quiet
Give us sonio more oi this open talk,
it’s very ref reshin’ diet.
Just then the minister says, says ho,
‘And now I’ve coine to the fellers
ffho’ve lost this shower by usin’ their
friends
As sort o’ moral umbrellas.
Go home,” says he, “and find your faults.
Instead of huntin’ your brothers’;
Go home,” says he, “and wear the coats
You’ve tried to tit for others ”
Hy wife she nudge 1 and Brown he winked,
And there was lots o’ smilin’,
And lots o’ lookin’ at our pew;
It sot my blood a-bilin’.
Says I to myself, our minister
Is grttin’ a little better;
I’ll tell him when meetin’s out. that I
Ain’t at all that kind of a critter.

OUT SHOPPING:
w ELL. good sakcs! Goo 1 morning Mrs. Smith; where so earlv this morning?
Oh, Mrs. Jones, 1 am rut shopping. lam going to L. RICHARDS’Dry Goods
Store. That is the Place above ali others to get Good Goods : 1 mean First Class
Goods, at low prices. He will not be UNDE RSOLD. I have been humbugged long
enough, running around picking up every little old trashy article I see advertised; I
am sick a> and tired of it. It is just throwing money away.
Why Mrs. Smith, do tell. I have been caught in the same trap. I read the adver
tisements about Millions and Millions of Goods more than could be packed in all the
houses in Augusta. It just sets everybody crazy, and away we go to buy a collar for
le.: a paper of pins for acts.; a whole box of hooks and eves for Sets.; soap enough to
last a whole life time for lOcts.; dress goods at 5,6, 8 and lOcts not worth the making,
and thousands of things nothing but Hash, soiled goods, auction goods and all kinds
of stuff.
Well, Mrs. Jooe“, I have found it out at last. They do this to humbug us. They
know we are so easily humbugged, and when we get there we get so excited by being
baited with the trashy things, they get us in their power and we pay any kind of prices,
and many times pay just double what the articles are worth.
Why, Mrs. Smith, you don’t say that is the CASE !
Yes, Mrs. Jones, it is too true; and that is the secret of some of these merchants
making so much money by advertising these cheap things, just to get you there.
Well, done, Mrs. Smith, you have opened mv eyes, and thanks for it. I never under
stood it before. Now do tell me about this L. RICHARDS. Who is he, and where did
he come from?
Why, Mrs. Jones, I thought you knew. He is the same L. Richards that with his
brothers, V. AF. Richards, established the old Fredericksburg Store. You know the
old iirm was V. Richards & Bro. That firm is all busted up now and this L. Richards
has gone to himself at
THE AUGUSTA DRY GOODS STORE,
where he keeps the nicest and best selected stock of Dry Goods in the city—suited to
thewants of all at the Lowest Prices. Having had an experience of twenty-five years
he knows how to make selections for every one. You ought just to see beautiful styles
of Dress Goods, in all the new shades, and so cheap. And, oh! those beautiful Cloaks
they are perfectly elegant, so stylish! His Black Alpacas are the best and cheapest in
the city—and Black Casnmeres, he just beats the World He keeps everything in his
line you could wish for. Notions, ail kinds, Hosiery, Gloves, Ribbons and, oh those
exquisite Neck-ties, Rouchins of every description. He will sell you a whole piece of
six yards for 25 cents. Blankets, all prices—the prettiest I ever saw. Misses an i
Ladies’ Merino Pantaletts and UnUervests, and the nicest Perfumery. It would take
me a whole mouth to tell you of everything he l as. He is Agent for those spleiwlid
Razor-steel Scissors, and for different kinds Sewing Machine Needles. You can get six
needles for 25 cents. He carries on the SAMPLE BUSINESS just like he did in his
old House; sends samples to friends at a distance, and when he gets an order at retail
for $lO and over, will pay all express charges to the customer’s nearest depot. It is
such an accommodation, and so nice for those that cannot visit the city.
Well, good morning, Mrs. Smith, I am so glad you told me of this L. Richards.
Good morning, Mrs. Jones. Here is one of his cards I give you.
