Disenchanted.
I thought her eyes were dark and deep;
I thought her mouth was sweet and sad.
I thought no woman had such grace
Of form and feature as she had.
I watched her with a restless Wish
That I might touch her shapely hand,
And make her small, imperious head
Turn graciously at my command.
It seemed to me her voice was full
Of latent tenderness. Her pride
Seemed potent to compel at will
All creatures to or from her side.
So full of awe I came to be,
Site scarce seemed human, in ray eyes;
And all unconsciously she wore
Before me many a grand disguise.
I never loved her! Why then should
Her nose be such a perfect nose?
Her eyes express such wondrous thiDgs.i
Her lips be sweeter than the rose?
Oh, disenchantment! Is it fair
That you should throw- so keen a light?
That she who reigned unwittiugly
Should la.il so helpless in my sight?
She is not less than she was then.
If I had only read her clear,
And even now I cannot tell
W hat far-seen grace I miss when neai.
Her eyes are dark and deep and strange;
Her mouth is tender, sweet and sad;
Her form has many a soft contour
That I was unaware it had.
And yet the glamour wears away
And more and more I shun her face;
I’m self-accused of fickleness,
Because 1 Had her commonplace.
Perhaps when—the reaction gone—
My judgment will step wisely in
And fix her proper place, where she
Can truer admiration win,
And I will find her just as fair
And more subs'initial than of old;
And all my glittering sentiment
May be outshone by her own gold.
