One Woman's Answer.
He kissed her lovely downcast eyes,
Her bonny brown locks falling low—
“My heart, love, was not over wise
To be caught In this silken snare. I know.
Fate mocks us in malicious guise—
The world forbids the bans—and so
Kiss me, darling, and let me go!”
She stood a-tip-toe at his side—
Her tawny head just reached his breast—
‘ Ah, love, whatever fate betide,
Of all tho world I love thee best!
And what were all the world beside,
If fate from mine thy hand should wrest?”
She drew his dark face down, and prest
IlUs lips with passionato kisses—“No,
M y love, I cannot let thee go 1”
“Nay, sweetheart, hear me out,” he said.
“Fate is averse, and the world unkind;
The way of life that we must tread
Ides dark before u-i, and love is blind.
Ease, wealth, the path with roses spread,
My dainty darling must leave behind,
To take up the burden of toil instead,
With care, and squalor, and want—and so,
Kiss me, dearest, and bid me go!”
Close she cuddled her dusky head
Against his breast—-“ Nay, dearest, see—
Jflove were over and hope were dead, Ime;
The wealth o’the world were naught to
But, sweet, were it ever so poor a shed,
And a simple crust earned cheerfully,
With love to sweeten the bitter bread,
Welcome a life of poverty -
Or welcome love and de ith,” she said,
“Jf only 1 live and die icith thee!”
Her white arms fettered him test—“Ah, no!
Dearest, I will not let thee go!”
