THE TARIFF.
Mr. Pemberton •—l’nder the editorial bead of
Irour paper of the 30lh October, you say *'lt is
really surprising to hear men seriously declare
that the Tariffhas caused a reduction in the pri
ces oftlie articles on which it operates." —“Wo
wish they would prove, or attempt io prove,
% which thev arc always particularly cautions of
avoidins, what they so frequently assert.”
Shew us how the principle of high duiics can
’ lower the price of goods, and we will at once
* acknowledge that ourselves and the opponents
* of the Tariff generally, know nothing at all of
(Jio subject.”
If Mr. Pemberton will have the kindness to
find room in his paper for our collections and
humble future essays on a tariff for the pro’no
tion of domestic manufactures, his surprise will
perhaps bo removed, oi greal'y diminished—
we will also endeavor to gratify his “ wish”
and “ shew” him “how the principle of high
Julies can lower the price of goods." —e will
too, attempt to convince his lenders —those at
!♦ ist, who arc not yet in the grand climacteric
of Taripbohia, as are the modern Hoi i/ord Can
't \ ventionitts of S. Carolina, yclept the “nullify-
I | ers"—that a Tariff for the protection of domes
r I tie manufactures, is neither the whale that swal
- lowed Jonah, nor Jonah who might otherwise
II have swallowed the whale—nor the sea serpent
« —nor the huge black alligator that fell last spring
; from mars, the moon, or the clouds, into Col.
n Stephen Swain’s cornfield alive —hut that it,
(a t:u iff for protection) is highly beneficial to, and
necessary fur, the interest and prosperity of the
■ United States; and to none of die states perhaps
more beneficial than to those of the South.
All these things Mr. Pemberton, we liope to
, make evident —provided you will give u- a place
11 in your paper; and which you will not, wo pro- '

of the Great Powers of Europe, which if
authentic, is of great interest. It is said
they have requested the concurrence of
the French Government, to the garrison

Prussian troops. The reply is stated
not to have transpired—but if wo are to
believe our Correspondent, who is so sit

the Netherlands will not be submitted to
by the French Ministry, who are reported
to have said, that their views of policy

prevail against the notional feeling, and
that their own safety world be compro

We cannot vouch for the authenticity of
this report, but in the present state of
