In the House this morning anew liquor bill was Introduced, and referred to a committee of live Demo crats. A. majority of the committee are s: id to bo iu favor of the law. From the Fisheries—France and Knglniul. Halifax papers of the 15th inst., state that the French cruisers had driven off the British vessels from a part of the coast which it was n!ipp ( -:e.l belonged to England, and it was believed that the French we re about to assert their ancient rights to those fishing grounds, which would seriously affect the fishing question. Two British cruisers had left lor Newfoundland. Three Men Killed in the Cherokee Xalion.—Hor rible and I!loady Work. —On .Sunday nigiit last, an In dian bv the name of .lack Vann, was killed on -the op posite side of the river from this place, by another In dian named Nitts, son of Big Kitts. On Monday, abont three o'clock, the coffin was ta ken over from town to the place where the corpse was, and while the friends of the murdered man were plac ing his body in the coffin, a quarrel sprung up between Big Nitts, and Lewis Vann, the brother of the deceased. Vann shot down Big Nitts, killed him instantly, and attempted to escape, but was pursued by the nephew of Nitts into the house of Mrs. Vann, widow of Mr. SV. L. Vann, when Lewis Vann lurnod upon his pur suer and shot him dead. In less than two minutes lie j killed two men, making three murdered men lying, r.s it were, together, a horrid spectacle to behold, bv any j civilized person. —Fort Smith Herald, of June •!. iU” Tile Rhode Island Episcopal Convention lias ! jonrned without electing a Bishop. Sale of Mount Vernon. —A dispatch from Washington says that the Mount Vernon estate has been sold, conditionally that it shall be of fered to Congress next session. The Right of Way. — A sucker who strayed ! up and squatted on the line where the railroad ; was to run, ~>as applied to for the right of way j through his farm. He objected strenuously. ‘ They would spoil his farm, and all Isis cattle ! would be killed when tho locomotive came along. When told that the company would pav him for ait such damages, he met the agent j with the reply: “Why, yes-perhaps they j might—if a feller eould catch’em—but when ; they come along with one of their cow catchers ! and tuk off his stock in the night—the darn j thing would be in Chicago before ho could get ; up and dross himself.’’ Babies in California. —Crying children in i church are usually considered as nuisances, and taken out ; but this is not always the case, as the following anecdote from the Ladies’ Reposi tory for April, will show : “A brother just returned from California, says he was present in tho congregation of brother Owen, when a babe in the arms of its mother began to cry. A tiling so unusual iu California attracted not a little attention, and the mother rose to retire. ‘Don’t lease,’ said the preacher, ‘the sound of that babe’s voice is more interest ing to many in this congregation than my own. It is perhaps the sweetest music many a man 1 lias heard since along time ago he took leave of j his distant home.’ The effect was iustantane- ; ous and powerful, and a large portion of the congregation melted into tears,” ‘•You say, Mrs. Smith, that you have lived with the defendant for eig t years. Does the court understand from that you are married to him V’ “In course it does.” “Have you a marriage certificate !” “Yes, your honor, three on’em—two gals and a boy.” A nobleman observing a large stone lying near his gate, ordered his servant, with an oath, to send it to purgatory. “If,” said the servant, “I were to throw it to heaven, it would be more out of your way,’’ Mobile end Glrwril Railroad. A meeting of the Stockholders of the Girard and Mobile Railroad was held at Greenville, (Ala.,) on tho 15th inst., for tho “purpose of consulting as to the propriety of common* eing work on the road” from that place to Mobile. Thomas S. Herbert was Chairman, ami si. J. Uolling Secretary. The meeting was address ed by 11. Blackmon, Capt. A. Seals, J. K. Hen ry, and others. Ibe only resolution adopted on the occasion was tho following, offered by Mr. Blackmon: Resolved, Fbat we who have subscribed work on said road will commence, and we who have subscribed money will pay our qno'.a as soon as the million dollars subscribed by Mot ile can be made available. The Alabamian says of this meeting: The exhibit of the agents at the meeting on Wednesday presented facts and figures not to be mistaken, and the effect on the stockholders was apparent in the increased confidence dis played. Fresh subscriptions to stock were ob tained. But one spirit pervaded the meeting, and that was an anxiety for the speedy comple tion of tho road. M e were much pleased with the remarks elicited from Mr. Henry. They were extremely pertinent, and carried convic tion along v, itit them. The business of the meet ing concluded, we could see by tile little knots collected in friendly discussion, that every one is on the qui vice.—Mobile Tribune. ■ Railroad Iron for the Augusta and Waynes j boro’ Railroad. Cheap Living.— We commend to our readers the following brief recipe for cheap living, ta ken from Thomas Moore’s Diary. It may per haps afford some hints, in these days, when beef and potatoes, and all other gastric furniture, are sold at such transcendental prices: “Dec. 28th, 18211. Dined at Bowood. Jekv! more silent than he used to be, but very agreea ble.
