(Turn's rmi) Sfutimt. FIFTEEN DAYS LATER NEWS FROM CALIFORNIA. ARRIVAL OF THE PHILADELPHIA. The U. S. -nail Steamship Philadelphia, J. P. MeKinstry, U. S. Navy, commanding, arrived here last evening, from Asplnwall, with the California mails and passengers, which came from San Fran cisco by the Pacifie Mail Steamers, Columbus and Golden Gate, which latter ship left San Francisco on the 16th uit. Many of the Philadelphia’s passengers crossed the Isthmus in a single day.and will reach New Orleans within twenty one-days from California. The Columbus and Golden Gate reached Pana ma respectively on the 27th and 29th tilt., bringing 753 passengers, the mails, and two and a half mil lions of gold dust on freight. The Philadelphia left Aspinwall on Sunday, July 3J. At noon on the 4ih, she exchanged colors with an American bark at anchor under the lee of Old Providence I Island. The isthmus was healthy, and not a single case j of sickness had occurred on board the Philadelphia. At 4 P. M., on the Bih, she spoke to the steamer Falcon, and exchanged newspapers with her. The news fioiri California, says that the Placer and Times, reaching our Atlantic brethren by to day’s mail departure, is rather more important than usual. The Golden Gate carries a good ac count of our agricultural prospects for the present season. The harvest has commenced, and from every part of the Slate the report is that the grain product will vastly exceed that of 1852. All sorts of field crops are equally good. Fiom every sec tion of the Plaeers we hear of most satisfactory re sults : indeed mining has never been carried forward with such general success. Quartz mining has re ceived a fresh impetus from the influx of capital, and will soon contribute largely to the gold product of California. In politics, both pariies are awaiting the nominations of the convention soon to assemble. The democracy make their Htate nominations next week at Benicia. I'or Governor John Bigler and jWajor Roman are the prominent cand dates, and the result of the county conventions is strongly in dicative of the re-nomination of Gov Bigler. Com mercially, the intelligence is not so favorable to in terests abroad. The market is overstocked with many of the chief articles of consumption. Some lately arrived cargoes have been sold at a discount ot ten per cent, from the cost. Consignees are in structed to hold on for higher prices. Shippers, however, fail to orderthem to draw for the freight, and the expenditure alone equals half a million per month, requiring that amount of goods at least to he forced upon the trade. It was very hot weather yesterday in Sou Fiancisco, decidedly the hottest day of the season. At Marysvil/e, on the 14th, the heat was almost intolerable, and Sacramento fared little better. At all ihese points, however, and in deed throughout the State, general good health pre vails, for which it behooves all people to lie thankful. [ Correspondence ot the Delta. ] Duel between Gwiu and McCorkle. Six Fkancisco, June 8, ]Bo3. Editors Delta.—A duel was fought between the Hon. Wo. 11. Gwin and the Hon. J W. McCorkle, on the Ist instant, upon the boundary line between San Francisco and Santa Clara counties. The weapons used were rifles—the distance thirty paces. A number of spectators were on the ground, .li ter three shots, both parties being uninjured, the j matter was satisfactorily adjusted by a mutual ex- ; planation, showing that the affair grew out of a mis understanding. The seconds drew up and signed I a statement to that effect. The Lighthouse Contract. —The parties contrac ting to put up the Lighthouse upon the Faria Mones have been unable to commence their labors, on account of the opposition of squatters. ‘/Vie New Collector—Lota Monies — Mrs. Sinclair —The New collector of this port will not assume his office until the ensuing month. Lola Montes finishes, to-night, a very successful engagement. — Mrs. Sinclair is still playing to large audiences at Sacramento. Abundant Crops. Throughout the interior the j farmers speak in glowing terms of the prospect of i an abundant harvest. The Wheat crops especially | promise largely. Mining Prospects. —The miners, also, are more I than usually prosperous ; several new and rich dig gings have been discovered, and old onea.are being ; worked to advantage. Indian Murders. —Major Walter H. llarvey and Mr. Y oting were found murdered in Tulare conntv. ft is supposed the deed was committed by the Indi ans belonging to the ranehe of Major Savage, who ■ was killed by Harvey several months ago. The In dians were much attached to Stvage, and had sworn to avenge him. Harvey was universally es teemed in California, and hits loss is a subject of general regret. Aihance in Exchange. —The lead ing hankers of this city have advanced the rate of Exchange to 4 percent.—being compelled, as alleged, by an ad vance of i per cent, of ireiglit on treasure. Oregon — (i n. Lane — Election for Delga'r In Oregon nothing is talked of hut the approaching election for Delegates to Washington. Gen. Lane has resigned the Governorship, and is stumping tin: Territory. He will undoubtedly be elected. Judge A. A- Skinner is the opposing candidate. SENEX. IS/” Mr. Maurice O’Connell, M. P., eldest son of the late Daniel O’Connell, died suddenly in Lon don on the 17th tilt. His Excellency M. do Bille, the Danish minister j at the Court ot St. Janies, also died unexpectedly in London on the lßch uit. Pardoned. —The somoivhat celebrated Dr. Hines, it will be remembered, was convicted some eight j months since in the U. S. District Court, and sen tenced to six monihs’imp isonmem in the county j jail, to hard labor, and at the expiration of that time to pay a fine, and remain in jail until the fine v\ ~s paid. His term of imprisonment expired some months ago, but being unable to pay the tine, he was detained in prison. We are informed that sev eral citizens who knew that Hines was unable to pay the fine, petitioned the President to have him par doned, which request was complied with, and on Monday last the captive bird was once more upon the wing. Whether the Doctor has acquired any lessons in morality, duting his sojourn on the Souiit Cpinman, his future career will disclose. It js enough for the public to know that the notorious Dr- Hines is once more at large. .<Kr Hendrickson, convicted of the murder of j his wife, in Albany, has been sentenced to be buna on the the 26th ot August. I finally started for home, but received no bene fit from the voyage. My cough continued to grow worse, aid when I arrived in New York, I was at once marked by my ac quaintances as a victim of consumption.
