They lately met at Vicksburg ami had a personal rencontre, the particulars of which are contained in the report of the examina tion before the Mayor, which we find in the Vicks burg- Whig . as follows: J Wm. Henry Johnson, sworn : Testified, in sub stance, as follows : Gen. Davis had that day had a conversation, in witness’ presence, with Capt. Wm. Barksdale, in reference to matters occurring . sometime | revious, at the house of Mr. Lanier, in Madison county, w here Davis and Barksdale were on their way to attend the late Democratic State Convention. Sometime afterwards, of the same day, (Friday, July 1,) Davis requested witness to give him a certified -latement of certain portions of the conversation, held in his presence, which Col. Davis deemed material to his jdefence in the can vass between them. Witness felt great delicacy in giving the certificate, but did not feel at liberty to lefttse. Meeting Capt. Barksdale afterwards, wit. ness informed him that he had given Gen. Davis a of their conversation. Barksdale did not appear entirely satisfied, and complained of Davis I Wquesting such a certificate. witness. Caption Barksdale, and Mr. Walker of the Senti nel, were taking teaat the Washington Hotel, (the quarters of Davis and Barksdale,) Davis came in, and took a seat at the table immediately in front I l-of Bakndale, remarking that wi'h Barksdale's per mission, or something to that effect, ho would face vhim during supper Davis spoke m a tone of pleas aritry. Witness did not recollect Barksdale’s re - ply. Soon alter Barksdale rose and let t the table, Walker and witness accompanying him to his room. ; Immediately afterwards. Davis carno to Barksdale's idoor, and remarked to B , that, as he wished to see him, he was at hi- service. Barksdale invited wit ness and Walke to be seat’ tl, and left, going with iD.vis U die latter’s room, itnme.iately adjoining. iTnev hail gonebutash- rt lime, w hen witness heard ‘ loud and angry talk mg t etween B-o ksitale and Dr vis. Mr. Walker suggested to witness that they should go in and merit te, lest a difficulty should ; ocr ur, as the patties seemed much e>eiteu, from flheir tone of conversation. Before tln v hao deter mined to go, however, Davis came in, followed by B irk-dale. Davis sad, as soon as he came in. -1 call upon you, gentlemen, to bear witness that (Captain Barksdale has challenged me, and 1 have agreed to fight him.” B irksdale exclaimed that it was false. Davis tepoaied his remarks, during which Barksdale interrupted him with the excla mation lhatit was false. Davis Immediately struc Barksdale with his hand, when Barksdale rushed towards him and they clenched. Witness and Walk er immediately attempted to septaate them, when .Walker said Davis had a knife and had ctn Cap ain .Barksdale. Mr. Rogan, proprietor of tho hotel, leant a in, and, with his assistance, the combatants separated. . In addition to tiie foregoing testimony, Col. Uuti |ben Davis made a voluntary statement, in which he said that when Capt. Batksdate invited him te go to l bis room, he supposed it was for the purpose ot m iking some arrangements as to the discussion ■which was to take place between them that evening : . But as soon as Capt. Barksdale entered Ins (Davis) I room with him, he (Barksdale) commenced abusing | him violently. lie (Davis) thereupon invited Barks- i dale to “leave his room, as he did not want any : difficulty with him.” Barksdale refused to go. Upon the invitation, bur continued his violence, and ‘■ stated that Davis should fight, and challenged him ilo do ao. I Davis immediately accepted the challenge, and sa'-d fth the w..uni “tight him with pistols, at ten paces, j jin Al.b aim, immediately beyond the line, opposite j ! (Columbus. Mississippi, and that they would h ave ; {for tne split early in-he morning.” Barksdale then proposed that they should tight it on tat once, which be (Davis) refused to do, ns it was dark, but reiters ted nis acceptance of Capt. Barksdale's olti.lh uge, as before related, and proceeded to the room of B rksdale, adjoining, where Mr Johnson and Mr. j W Iker were, followed by Barksdale When he I called upon those gentlemen to bear witness to the fact nl Capt. B.'s challenge and his acceptance, h* jHtink he also stated the terms and pi roe of the light, JAt this time Barksdale denounced Davis’ statement *as false, and struck trim with Iris fist, which he (Davis) attempted to ward off, and then lie (Davis) opened h s pocket-knife which he exhibited and (commenced cutting Barksdale. J P. 8. Having given an abstract of tho testimony in the lease before the .Mayor, upon the arrest of Col. Davis, we fhavr; treen requested to insert the following brief version the matter, on the part of Capt. Barksdale: which ive |Mo cheerfully, as Capt. Barksdale was not present on the ■ i trial, and therefore could not give his testimony. Capt. j Barksdale says: i| “On learning that. Col.
