DEATH AND SLEEP.
BY WM. B. WALLACE.
r
Silently from her cloudy tower,
The pale m m looks around:
How the awed heart (eels in the midnight hour
That God hath no awiuier type ot power
Than daikuesa without sound
m ir.
la the deep of the quiet here I muse;
A shadowy form in the deep
Has withdrawn the dark and terrible veil
From the Dead One’s solemn sleep.
I them asleep in their narrow home 3
O, Heaven I how still tb.-y lie
With the pathos of theiT loliied hands,
■ Ynd they faces wan. tied tip in hands.
In the w hite andsutfand pitiles bauds,
Turned ever up K> the sky,
To the tar off, silent sky.
111.
In the hush of the darkness I behold
‘I he Living laid'to sleep
As still through the sliad -wv awe of night
As the Dead ones in their D ep;
Their hands are as tendedy fold up;
Andthi-ir forms as quietly lie,
And their faces, wan w.t t an awful calm,
Are turned the same to the sky.
To ilia lar od, silent sky. “ _
IV,
Oh,there are two worlds n the a,we of night—
'l he worlds of the Q tick and ins Dead;
And they look trom ‘heir tetr.bla re.t alike
To the ft II ;ky overhead;
Asa prophet image they epeak to rite soul
O’ the time when without a b eath
The datk-neJ eatth -hail solemnly roll
lint an iijhty place of Death—
Cbull a desolate, niOurnfol aepolcher roll
Till tno resurrection’s bieaih I
V.
Then silently from the cloudv tower,
O, pale Moon, look aroutui—
While the awed heart feels in the midn'eht hour
That God hath nc awtulsr tjpe of power
Th in daikcss without sound.

From llie 5 niihern Presbyter irn.
An Appeal to the Presbyterians of Georgia, !
South Carolina, Alabama and Florida. j
CMetliorpe Coi'cge is ilte'crenture of the S , nods
of the above men ioned States. The reputation |
of Presbyterians for sound and thorough educa- !
trio, an I their just appreciiDon of the value of |
such education, should lead the members to s e
that alt obstacles to the extended usefulness of j
their College should be promptly removed ; ,n and
that the very best appliances tor the heart ami j
inind should be vigorously mid speedily provided :
A good college is an immense engine of uio ai
F lower. Shall we h ive this power in its best torm ?
t is but for the church to will it, and with the D.-
vine blessing the work is achieved.
Will tire brethren, one and all, ministers and lay
men, give more than a passing t:eatijn to the fol
lowing facts. From letters of enquiry leceived
from parents and guardians in advance, it is mor
ally certain that we shall have an unprecedented
number of applicants for entrance into College at
the opening of the scholastic year on the Ist of Oc
tober next.
Our College buildings are now crowded with stu
dents to their utmost capacity, and we shall be !
compelled, in all probability, lo reject a large num
ber unless we can secure considerably increased ac
commodations.
Must these young men, many of them the sons
of the church and candidates lor Christian minis
try, be sent away to other folds for their mining?
This question must be speedily?decided, as the en
ergy or the snpineness of the church shall declare.
Skilful architects have been consulted, and they
tell us that at least §15,000 must be secured in ad
dition to what has already “been conditionally
pledged by the Literary Societies of the institution,
to put up the necessary buildings with a suitable
reference to convenience and tastefnlness ot'struct
ure. Our Board are determined—and most justly
—not to go in debt, and yet they feci the necessity
of prompt action.
Contracts, it is said, can at this time be made to
great advantage, with skilful workmen who are
about lo close engagements ou public State build
ings in the vicinity.
Will the friends of the cause in the above men- ‘
tioned S ate* move in this matter without delay,
and give liberally to the cause? Cannot those or
limited means, find one, or two, or ten, whom they
can influence to do something handsom • ? They
need not fear giving too much. When our build
ings are completed we shall need more means tor
two additional professorships and for increasing our
Library and Apparatus. The money will be eco
nomically expended. Who win erect a b ill ?
Who wiil endow a professorship? Who will-lay
a foundation for an ample cabinet in our depart
ment? Who will secure means for an ample 1.-
brary ? Wili'our Allun ni, numbers of whom are
already occupying inlitterriial stations ot useful
ness. secure, each man, at least §1005? And wiU
Christians, who are pmr in this world’s goods, but
rich in faith, remember our colegn in their daily
petitions at a throne ot grace, and ask that God
will multiply nn hundred fold onr 40 ministers al
ready sent out into the M ister’s vineyard ?
Mv apology for this appeal must be found in the
pressing nature of the call. I cannot resist ihe im
pression tnat onr members cannot more effectually
servo the churth, and theic generation, or appropri
ate their means to a better use than in the way
proposed.
If it will not supply the present lamentable va
cancy's in our Southern churches and missionary
Ce de, with native ministers, it will at least lay the
foundation for a more ample supply for the next
g.-ns ration.
The more prompt the acti’ nos each man, with
out \va lmg for an Agent, or to see what others wiil
do. the morn valuable it will be to our good and
gtowi g cause.
Send ‘is such gtfiran'ees for aid as will author
ize the B tan! to move forward safely and wits dis
patch. Circulate the fact of our necessity at every
gathering, and with every man, ami woman ton,
you meet. And do not -top with an ample endow
ment nf our cofeg t. We inve letn tie instiiu ions
that must be looked alter and fjste ed, if we design
any longer to stand abreast if other denominations,
and if we would c>uie up to the lull measure o!
oar duty to the risihg generation—the hope of the
church and of the State.
