General Concha and the Slave Trade in Cuba.
The following s from the Corresponder ee of the Lon
don Times, dated he 27th of Ala y, at Madrid :
* Gem ral Concha’s open opposition to Government
renders h>s brother's removal from the command of Cu
ba even more certain than before* I have grounds for
believing that this lucrative vice royalty—the great am*
bt on of every Spanish General, and the nomination to
which is equivalent (bes Mes the honor and glory ot the
post) to the grant of a large foriune—was recently offer
ed to General Roa de Olano, who, however, felt himself
compelled to decline it, on account of the implied condi
tion of supporting the Government. It is B.:id to have
been thrice uLrtd to him, until he at Inst declared ihit
he should consider the application nu intuit, if renewed. 1
He informed Concha of what had parsed, and the knowl
edge that his brother was as good as dismissed, perhaps j
contributed somewhat to the decided opposition the M.: r :
quis de Duero last wet k, slmwed to the Government, in
the Senate. It is thought, here, that the scandalous
manner in which the Slave Trade has lately been carried
on in Cuba, *.v; h the connivance, aid to the profit, o[
Jose Concha, and the reprtfentations of England, on the
subject, have, also, in seme degree, moved the Spanish
Government to change the Captain-General. Is h pro
ha bio that Genera! vvi! suivec i him, iu which 1
case I suppose that Senor Gonziiea Bravo will take the
Mioi-sti-y of Af irioe, a* Narvaez is desirons of having
him in the Government.’’
The following is from a bter letter by the same cor
respondent :
“The r; cal! of General Concha is still talked of as cer
tain, although some pei*i;us thi k th t the Government
may, perhaps, in pursu ince of the conciliatory policy an
nounced by General Narvaez, avoid dismissing him, end
await h. 6 resignation, which i expected, hs a cues*, quencc
of some severe communications that have been made to
li ni. The time at which his period of office expires, is
now so near, that peremptorily to recall him, might be
Uken fur an net c f vengeance, provoked, by his brother’s
hostile demonstrations against the Gen eminent. In
truth, however, there are abundant and valid motives lor
dismissing him, even without disgrace. -4s yiu may
we are here kept miautely informed of what
goes on iu Cuba by numerous Jet ers and Ireqoent arri
vals from that island. Resent aconnts give details <*f the
scandalous maunner in which Don Jose Concha, Mar
quis f the Havannah, has encouraged, k?r his twn ad
vantage, the importation, ot negroes.
‘‘ln the ccrlv days of this (his second) command in ;
Cuba, he parted the slave trade with extraordinary r gor
and activity. Cordons of troops were established oti ;!i j
nud frequently domiciliary visits were made, ip ti e i
plantations. When this vigilance and seventy had pro i
daoed their efTwOt, and that, owing to the rarity of the j
article, the value of the negroes had rtar.y doubled itself, j
the Captain*(reneral suddenly relaxed the rein, and con - j
uived at imp, rtaiion,on condition of reoo v ng tour ounces ;
per head ot negroes, instead of two, with which his pre- j
dceessors bad ennteuted themselves. l 1 is estimated j
that one hundred thousand slate* hare been brought J
into Cuba, during his command there, and that he j
has made about, eight hundred thousand dollars by the
transaction. To this enormous sum must be added, oth
ers also very considerable, received in the form of pots j
de tin —in other words, bribes for preferences and pro- !
tection granted tu particular enterprises. So that Gen. |
Jose Concha, who is noted for'his parsimony, will return j
to Europe with a princely fortune. Not being on the j
spot, I, o! c. urse. con not guarantee the correctness ol !
these particulars, but 1 give them to you on the faith of !
the accounts from Cub*, trustworthy, as I believe; and,:
it may be added, that they accord with reports long cur j
rent, with the frequent complaints lately addressed to the
British Government, .and through Lord llowden, to that
ot Spain, and also that they are generally credited here.
If they be true, the sole quality that appeared to render
General Concha eligible tor the supreme command in
Cuba namely, his probity—melts away and disappears
Os the possession ot superior abilities, and especially of
administrative knowledge, I believe be has never been
accused.”
Walking ia Fire—New Dress for Firemen.
Some very interesting experiments have recently been
made in Paris upou the preservation of firemen from the
effects ot the flames, the importance of which will be
apparent ;o all. Three firemen hnv.ng their bauds pro
tec.tcd. by amianthus gloves carried a bar of iron, heated
to whiteness, same distance, without being compelled to
pause, for over three minutes.
A fire o! straw and small wood was lighted around a j
casting boiler, and when it w.<s very hot, a fireman, hv- j
iug bis head prutco ed by an amianthus hood and a me
taiiio tissue, and bearing a wide shield upon his right
arm, wa placed in it, the fire being kept intensely hot
while he remained. For a moment his head was sur
rounded by the slimes, but the shield served to keep it
oft. He remained in this position 90 seconds, when the
heat became unendurable. IBs pulse roe iruin 72 t
152. Another fireman repeated the experiment, protect- :
e*i by atuiaß hui-eot on, aud remained exp ired to the di- j
red ae.ion ot the fl tines upon his bead fur three miiiU’.ee
aud 47 seconds.
In another experiment, two long and high piles ot ;
wood aud straw’ were erected, with side openings through
which the firemen could escape, if compelled to do so.—
The four men who were to enter this burning enclo
sure were covered with anew metallic t xture ; two
wore an amianthus garment over a drew of cloth, made
incombustibl by borax, alum and phosphate of ammo
nia ; the other two had a doubl garment of prepared
cloth ; and each of them had amianthus boots, With a
double sole of the same substance. Finally, one of them
carried a ba>ket upon his shoulders, coveted with metal
lic tissue, in winch was placed a child ten years old,
dressed likewise in amianthus.
‘i his metallic tissue dress consists of a hood, the edges
of which cover the shoulders and left sleeve, the right
•arm being protected by a shield, and of pantaloons fas
tened by hooks. Clothed with this armor and the habit*
of which we have spoken, the firemen can run or stoop
eusdy l pud can turn readily by placing one kuee upon tke
graaod.
The four firemen thus attired penetrated to the centre
of the tl xnmg hedges, and walking lci.-ure-y, went over
it several times, iu one tninuie, however, the child in
the basket raised a cry which caused th* fireman to
treat preyip lately But it was found that he had suffered
D > harm ; his i-kin was fresh, and his puise, bl when he
entered, had only reached 96. lie could undoubtedly
h ive remained much longer had he not been frightened,
from the fact that oue of the straps holding the basket
to the man’s shoulders, having slipped a little, he saw
the tl tmes and was afraid of tailing, iu a few minutes
alter he was as playful as ever, and evperieneed no in- j
cjnveuiencc whatever. The pulse of tbe fireman who j
curried the child, roue fioiu 92 to 116 |
£ The other three men w;re in the fire 2 minutes ano i
44 seconds, and came out without having experienced j
any further ineonv nh nee than great warmth. Their j
pulses rose from 88, 84 and <2, to 1.>2, L>B aud 124
resp ctivHy. The fire was very hot during the entire
time. O.her ot these highly interesting experiments are
tu follow.— X. Y. Evening Post.

IN ‘TEXAS.
Hear ht tlis Proprietor i)f toe “.Star Hotel” has to say
of the wonderful effects of M'L ins’s Vermifuge:
•*ssrAß H ‘tel,” Centerville Texas,'Aug 22. ’54.
J/essrf. Fleming Bros: —
1 feel it mydu-.y to make ‘ha fallowing statement: Sev
eral ol my children have been unwell for the last week or
two. I called at the “Big Mortar” to get tome of the Oil
ot Worm seed and other truck, to give them for worms.—
The Druggi-t recommended M'Lane’s Vermifuge, prepared
by you, but, having heretofore tried every Vermifuge in
mr knowing, without advantage, I told him it was not
woith while, as mV children appeared proof against them
all. He said to take a bottle, and oflered if it dona no good
to refund tile money. To satisfy him, I done so, and the
effect was so much bettor than expected that 1 got another
bottle, and the result was most astonishing. Three of my
children discharged a great number of the largest worms
l over saw. To a young man, my Mail Carrier, who was
weak, puny and poor as a snake, for a month or so, I gave
two doses, which .brought from him at least a pint of
what ia called stomach worms! Strange as this may ap
pear, yet it is as “true as preaching.” How the boy stood
it, so long as he did, with ten thousand “Bots” gnawing at
his stomach, it the greatest wonder to mo. AH ihese ca
res are now doing weli. No doubt tbs lives of thousands
of children have been saved by the timely use of this ex
traordinary medicine. Don t fail to give it a trial.

OR LIVER REMEDY,
IS REQUIRED TO GURU ANY ONE TROUBLED WITH
1 Liver Complaints, uiresa the most ileperate of caaes, when
the second bottle will, with carce a single failure restore the
palieut to health and vigor. Wo wish, to cull the attention ol
all to these lacis, that the Invigorator is compounded by a
physician who has used it in his practice for the pnn twenty
years with a success almost incredulous, and that It i9 entire
iy vegetab e, being composed wholly ot gums.
Some idea of the streng h of these gurus may be formed
when il is known of the Invigorator contains as
much strength as one hundred doses .ol Calomel, without any
ot its deleterious effects.
One bottle rs tho surest'thing known to carry away tLe bad
effects o mineral poison of any kind.
(July one bottle is needed to thr ow out of the system the ef
fectsof medicine after along sickness.
On - bottle (taken for jaundice removes all yellowness or
unnatural color from the skin.
Our dose after eating is sufficient to relieve the stomach
and prevent the food .from rising and JJsour.ng.
only one dose taken before retiring prevent* nightmare.
One dose taken at night loosens the oowels cure*
cos’.iv dtess.
one dose taken after each meal will cure Dyspepsia.
One dose of two tea-spoonsful will always relieve Sick
Headache.
One bottle taken for female obstruction removes the cause
of the disease, and makes a perfect cure.
Only one dose immediately relieves cholic, while
Oned *ae of'en repeated is a sure cure for Cholera Morbus,
and a sure preventative ol Cholera.
One dose taken often will prevent the recurrence of bil
ions attacks, while it it relieves all painful teeings.
Une or two doses taken occasionally is one ol the best rem
edits for a cold ever known.
Thousands of cases of in fi animation end weakness of the
lungs have been cured by the Invigorator.
One dose taken a short, time before eating giv* s vigor to
the appetite aud makes food digest w*ll
One dose often repeated cures chronic diarrhoea in iis wors
forms, while summer aud bowel complaints yield almost to
the first dose.
une or two doses cures attacks caused by worm*, while for
worms in children, there is no surer, safer and speedier rem
edy in the world, as it never fails.
There Is no exaggeration in these ’statements, they are plain
and sober tacts, that we can give evidence to pr >ve; while all
who use it are giving .thtir unanimous testimony in its favor.
We wish all who are sick and debilitated ‘o try this remed}
and te< it thoroughly, and any who jure not benefited by Iu
u-ewe should like to hear from, as vehav yet to hear from
ihe first person who has u:ed a bottle of Invigorator without
receiving benefit, for t iher are such a-to dshing uiedicinaJ
