(’OMMi:U< IAL RECOKI).~
COTTON—The trade opened at the begining
of last week wish animation, ar.d
continued so until Saturday night. V> u have never
known at this season of the year so much cotton
received and sold as during the past week. In
fact every department ol trade participated largely
in this unusual activity.
Our inquiries horn the planters lead us to the
opinion that these heavy receipts of Cotton are
premature, anti that the larger bulk ot the present
crop will be gathered by the Ist November. The
arrivals item continued to advance the
market, and on Satuidaysales were freely made at
115 8® 11 34, and iruffTthe feeling manifested,
we can alme-t promi-e our readers that the trade ol
the coming week will bn iudy as large and ani
mated with perhaps a better averag e price.

Cotton Crop.
The Southern Stales are getting to be regarded 1
as the only source lor the supply of cotton to keep
in motion the almost numberless mills oi Europe,
Great B.itaiu and the United Siates—the only ‘
means of meeting the now increasing demand for ‘
clothing by ihe inhabitants of new cotton produc
ing countries. Ia this view the tact is not alto
gether compatible to contemplate that llio crops of j
the last three year- hove reached 9.570.0C0 bales, j
while thr,,crops of the three previous years were !
9,033,000-an increase ol five per cent. only, while I
the price has been 890 per bale, against §36, in j
other words, that nearly the same amount of cot- |
ton in the last three years has realized 465 millions, j
against 326 million dollars tor ihe previous three i
year-. T bis has arisen from the fact that tho de
mand has outrun the supply, and the new year j
opens with a high price and an upward tendency.
The cotton supply has been as follows;

Great Britain lias got the lion’s share this year,
and at comparatively low prices bv reasm of the
panic, which sent the price from 18c to 9c. So I
far the panic was a great gain to Great Britain, j
She got not only cotton but oiler produce at un- !
expectedly low priees, by reason of the panic.
In regard to the consumption of the U. States, i
the data fr|im which the annual tables are compli
ed is less satisfactory The total consumption
in the Northern and Western States is reached by
deducting the exports and stock on hand from the
receipts, and the amouut thus obtained for ihe last
year was 722,133 bales, and these are ihe figures
givenin our comparative table; to this should be
added at least 150,000 bales for the consumption in j
the Southern States, which is not included in the
reckoning. The following comparison does not
include the consumption in the coiton growing
Slates;
Consumption of Cotton in the Northern
States compared with total Crop.

In regard to the next crop, opinions are widely
at variance, aud as the result will be affected in a
greater degree than usual by the weather for the
next thirty or sisjjy days, no reliable estimate can
now be formed. The average ol the extremes
would probably fail a little below 3,002,000 bales, j
but we think tho total may even exceed these
figures,— United Stales Economist.
NEW YORK, Sept. 13— D y Goods.—The j
Dry Goods trade during the week has been .more
ac.ive, and a satisfactory business has been trans
acted. Southern trade has been somewhat retar
ded. in consequence ot tne prevalence of yellow
fever iu many of the large towns and cities ot ’ lie
South; present appeirances, however, indicate *
that a much larger amount ol goods will bo sold
to hat section, the present season, than had been .
anticipated Western buyers are now ia market
in large numbers, paying up well and buying free
ly The present is a busy lime with jobbers, and
there are indications ot a good tall trade. Ihe
Auction Sales of French goods were well atten
ded, and good prices were obtained- Dress Goods
and shawls are in good demand.
Haggerty's sale of tailoring goods passed offat
fair prices. The importation of German cloths
has been large, but the demand is dull.
Domes'ic Goods have been ia active request, for
both export and hajiio consumption. Stout Brown
Drills are firm atß*®34; 4,000 b-ies have been
take# for the China market. Fine cotton are iu
better demand is limited. We quote Cocliecos
10 cents and active. Do Lancs, of foreign manu
facture, of desirable styles, in demand ; low grades
active at 10c©lie. American Da Laines.oi me
dium qualifies, are in good inquiry. Satinet- and
Fancy Cassiineps are in improved request. The
supply ol brown and Bleached Domestics in s year
is small, and the quantity of cotton taken by spin
ners to this date, is 210,211 bales less than during
the same time last year.
Liveffojl, August 27,1858.
COTTON —The intelligence of the termination
of the war wiih China, and the opening ot her
ports to commerce, produced an auspicious influ
ence on the market, which was further stimulated
by the great thinness and extreme animation at
Manchester, where an advance of an hh was es
tablished, and a further upward tendency main
tained during the week. The sales here have been
very liberal and priees have hardeued from day to
day, until an advance of aa ith on all qualities
has been realized. We quote:

During the week the weather has been general
ly favorable lor harvesting, and consequently the
markets, botli here and throughout the Kingdom,
have been very quiet, and former quotations barely
maintained.
To day’s market was well attended, and prices,
panicularly lor fine parcels of Wheat and Flour,
were well supported, and closed firmly at last

! FFEEDOM FROM FEVER AND AGUE
TPJ'JIHPHAHT SUCCESS!
THE
GRENADA ELIXIR,
OR
South Amercan Antidote for Malarial
Is a sure Cure and Perfect Route to Ague
and Fever, Chill and Fever, Dumb Ague,
and all Bilious Affections !
IT has been thoroughly tested iu thousands of
eaes. some of years’ standing, wh-re Quinine
and all the most popular remedies of the day had
failed, but the Elixir has met with ihe must tri
umphant success; never failed to cure the most
obstinate cases The unanimous testimony of all
who have used or witnessed its operations, declare
it to be the most extraordinary medicine ever dis
covered for ihe quick and permanent cure of Fe*
ver and Ague, ft operates as a gentle. Tonic and
stimulant, gradually hut surely; eradicates every
tc'siige of disease, arid restores the system to health
and vigor. If imparts new vitality to the blood,
and wil soon induce the glow of health to return
to the pale aud swarthy complexion.
The advantage of this medicine therefore is, that
a cure must he radical and compile; not simply
breaking the Chill, by producing a ‘‘new impres
sion” upon the nervous system, without reference,
to the operations of I lie malarious poison, which
is allowed io remain unchanged arid renew its at
tacks, immediately after the nervous system has
censed to feel the artificial disease—induced by
Quinine and many oilier preparations generally
resorted to. The GRENADA ELIXIR acts di
rectly upon the Liver, Stomach, Kidneys, Fores
of the Skin, and produces a radical cure.
It contains no ingredient the least injurious to
the system, and can be given to an inlarit with
perfect safety, it is warranted to cure every case
w hen taken as directed.
Ail who need such a medicine, will do well to
try the Grenada Elixir. 1 is not only the best but
the mU'i economical medicine ever introduced for
Fever and Ague and is a Southern Remedy.
Prepared only by
