house to be besieged by a crowd of anxious cl
zeas of toe United stares, who still regarded him
as possessed of some power and iafiaeoce. Tne
papers and records of the office were packed ap
and removed to Mr. Pierce's house aid the affi *a
left closed. Mr. Pierce left Matamoroa on the
16th. w.-h the intention of returning soon.
F r some time previous to leaving Mexico, M
Pierce had been engaged in official correspond is:
with Gaa. Mejia on the subject of delivering up
alleged fugitives to the rebel authorities at Brown-
Till*. Is reply to protests against this practice
the General answered that he only ordered the re
tun es tho*e guilty es some crime es magnitude*
and that this was done under an extradition tr-a;
While, however, this was the avowed thoor
the practice went far beyond and included the ie
livery up of anybody wanted by the rebels. There
is, of course, uo difficulty in trumping up a char go
to prefer against any one, and as there is ao trli !
nor examination, except to take the fugitive before
the chief alea ie and make a formal demand an i
identify the person, it opens the door to the rebus
to drag from the triendly and neutral shores af
Mexico any ene who may be thought to be hostile
to the Confederate cause, or who may be useful ; °
a conscript. It was officially given oat, however
that fugitive slaves were not surrendered.
There is unquestionably an atrempt on the pact
of the Brownsville rebeis and their sympathises
in Matamoras to complicate the relations existing
between tha United States and Mexico, and. if
possible, prove hostilities. By this moans they
hope to call in the aid of France, and thus bring
the weight of that power to bear on the rebel si ie
in the great contest that has been waged for four
years, and with resuits so unexpected and dis
heartening to the rebels. Tne refusal of our Gov
ernment te recognize Maximilian is artfully used
by public enemies in this country to serve their
ends, and 3tir up a feeling of resentment against
this count)y in Mexico. Thu appears to be fine
eauso of the -difficulty.
Grbslsts Estim\Tß.—The New Yorx Tr -

Sextsxce CoatMUTßD.—Lieutenant S. B. Dirj,
formerly keeper of the prison at Andersonv
Sa., who was arrested, tried and convicted a she:
time since by a military court martial in the
North of being a rebel spy, and who was sen

At the time of his arrest, as our readers are prob
