LOUISVILLE, 7VISDAK July U , 1800. ■ 1 "■ Copy of a letter from Colonel Hawkins , tp his Excellency Go vernor Jackfm , dated Fort Wilkinfon, July 18,1800, I informed your Excellency in ray laft by Tarvin of the ud- c v pe£led furren lerof the fort of St. Marks, to Bowles and his p'rtizans. As foon as this fhameful tranfaftion was made known to the officers of his Ca tholic Majcfty in PenDcola, lb«v unanimouflv de'ermined in a council f T war, that hi> excellen cy Don Vecente Folch, (hould form an expedition, for the pur po(c of retaking that fort; and for its better fuccefs, he (hould command it in pc> Ton. to this effe£l feven veffels of war, and two merchantment, armed, were put in rcadinefs, and on board of ilicm were embarked, the troops and (lores that were thought ncccflttiy for the un dertaking—This force fai ed on the 17th June. I have been informed by two runners to our Chiefs, from the Simenolas, who were at, or near St. Marks, on the arrival of this force, that the expedition has fuc ceeded. One of them a Cuflatuh reports, ‘ that the fleet appeared off the mouth of Apalatchc, and one (hip of war failed up and began to cannonade the fort, that on the appearance of this force, general Howies opened the (lores, invited the Indians Co take all the goods they could carrvofF, and to clear themfelves —this they did, and he and his partizans quitted the fort, and retreated to Miccofookc," The other a Cheauhau, reports, “ that he and his companions were encamped a little on this fide of the fort of St. Marks, that nine fail of Spanifh galleys were (cen cunjing up the river, atTight of which, Bowles began to put what goods ar;d ammu nition he could in a (mall veflel, and let out up the river; and his feoond man took the keys, opened all the (lores to the red people, and told them to take any thing they could cam off; but in the height of their plun dering, the galleys approached fo fall, firing a number of balls which hit and knocked down fomt of the w.II, and funk a fmall veflel lying under them, that the plunderers were alarm ed and fled. Gen, Bowles puflied up the river in his (mall vellel, but being di(covered, and puifueo by a galley, he and his Indians quitted her, and went on (horc, and the gdley captured the veil'd He further dates, that Howies wanted the Che.mhau Indians to fire on the Spaniards, which they refuted to do" I have the honor to be, With (mcere regard Sc efteem Sir, Your Excellency's Mod obedient fervant, BENJAMIN HAWKINS. His Excellency James Jack/on, Governor oj Georgia. sBLANK DEEDS For Sale at this OJjiee % The avidity with which a portion of the people in this country feized upo » publica tions boldlv advocating monar chial principles* and thedifeou ragment that refulted therefrom, as recent as the year'9s, cannot he forgotton by the friends of li berty in this country. The open and avowed ohjeft of Porcupine s Gazette was that of giving cur rency to Bntifh and monarchial principles, deftruhiive to repub lican conditutions and Dwa; and notwithdanding this inten tion was pofitively declared in the propolals fird idued by him, hundreds of per(ons, according to his own declaration, diling themfelves the friends of the American conflitution, were found on the lift of his fupport ers. But fortunately for this country, fortunately for the caufe of juffice and liberty, for tunately for the human race, that too much knowledge, virtue and republicanifm exided to permit fu h definitive fchernes of m yufticc and dcfpatifm long to prevail. The latent (parks of liberty, which lay beneath rub bifh and afhes, were fanned into a flame, and roufed into ation, by the attentive and perfevering arm of rcpublicanifra. Thole daik clouds of error and mifli cifm, which had overfpread our political horizon, and threa tened dcdrution to the caufe of liberty, were foon di pelled. In vain may dcfpoiifm at this day lay plans for the annihilation of republican vutue, as long as rhe Ameiicans are deiermined to rife fuperior in their energies to all the wicked maxims of ancient govcrmental tyranny. The re publicans have reafonto rejoice 1 hat thefe enenri'ea of hberty, thefe agents of defpotifm, thclc tools of royolty, can no longer find a comfoitable refidence in a land of liberty, aud are oblig ed to betake themfelves to c’imcs more congenial with their views and better calculated for works o( iniquity. The man who lives in a glafs hovfe ought not to throw Jlones Thank you Jew.” Could the dull pedant who appeared in Randoloh and Hunce's piper of the 9th inft with as much iruth d*nv the x corre£ling pen of the chief ma giflrjte of Augufla, in that mfi. pid peicc, as I do unequivocal ly deny the aid, privity, confent or knowledge, of the chief ma gifirate of this (late in any thing (certified official papcis excepted) that ever oppeared in the Republican Trumpet, the public would not have been troubled with the tedium of that lelf-conttadidiig exordium of inconfifteacics. Could my Loid Mayor, as clearly acquit himfelf of the charge of peculation on the pro perty of his fird emplowcrs,* as the citizens of this (late have tacitly acquitted the prefmt Governor from the complaints of fiich as him, by confiding their dearefl rights to his caie, at ail times, for more than twenty vears pa(l, his houfc would fcarccly yot been made ol brick. Could the author of that piece (who according to his own account, the weight of the (late ot Georgia in fohd gold could not conupt) with as much truth, deny his having eat tur tle loup and drank Madeira, on the intereft of the public puife as I can affert rh it the Aim of ten thouland dollars was miffing in the treafury accounts of the UR year, hings (at this time) might have been otherwife with him.
