As a dernier rvfort, the ene mies of Mr. Jrf/cr'on reprefent him as an alheifl, Thofe who believe this charge are rcqueUed to read and confider ihc follow ing production of his non ; a inorg the numerous fpecimcns of his regard to religion and vir- ! tnc tli. t might be produced. Dcfpotlfm endeavors to per petuate itfelf by various means, always claiming for its obje6t rhe public happincls. while in reali ty fupporting itfelf upon the ruins of every thing valuable in the character o( man. It always dubs itfelf the fupporler of reli gion, order and good govern ment. In Furope, under the charac ter of monarchy, it denounces as the enemies (ft God and man, all thole who attempt to call in queflion its decisions and its condu&. In America, under the name Fedcralifm, it has at tempted the deftiudfion of the republican ronflitution of tb.c Country, aflurned to itfelf exclu fively the poffellion of truth, economy jullice, and all the virtues of republicanifm, while it has and is couftantly direfting all its force to (he annihilation of the rights of man. When it is detected in its pre tentions to virtue, when it isdif covered that i( poffelfes no qua lifications that dclcrves the nann , it takes refuge under the pre vailing or popular icligion of the country, and their piety is de clared to be its hrghcfl objebt of purfuit. No c baratfers, howe ver valuable and righteous, can drape its anathems, unlels they bow r at its fhiinc. This Hefpoufm lias provoked an appeal to tire* conduct ol Mr. Jefferfon, whole painotilm and virtues will not only hand its (hock, but appears in more bril liant colours, proportionate as his character has been calum niated. Foiled in ihe attempt to (hew that Mr. Jtffeifon is net a ge nuine patriot and philanlhiopiff, it has recouife to a fubterfuge which canmot be lo caflly de leted. It declares him an atbeiff, a dcift. an enemy of God and religion. This veil, how ever, that is intended to cover the blackcft crimes, will be torn off by an enlightened people.
