WHEREAS his Excellency James Jackson, late Governor and Commander in Chief, hath this day accepted the appointment of Senator fiom this State, in the Congrefs of the United States, agreeably to his elcdbion thereto on the 18th day of November, in the year eighteen hundred by the legislature, and hath lignilied to me his refignationof the govern ment. And whereas, the fourth feefion of the fecond article of tiie conftitution declares — cc in cafe of the death or refignation cr difability of the Governor, the Prefident of the Senate fnall excrcife the executive powers of government, until fiich elif ability be removed, or until the next meeting of the General AfTembly.” By virtue of which the duties of the Executive have devolved on me. I have therefore thought fit to ifilie this my proclamation, hereby notifying all officers, civil and military, that I have aflumed the chief magiftracy of this Rate, and am now in the afhwl exercife of the duties 'thereof-—of which all perfons are required to take due notice, as they will anfwer the contrary at their peril. Given under my handy and the Great Seal of this fate, at the State Hcufe, in Louif ville, the third day of March, in the year of our Lord, eighteen hundred and one, and of American Independ ence the twenty-fifth.
