A PROCLAMATION.
WHEREAS in and by an
Aentitled “ an A6i
to repeal an Ordinance, paffed
at Augufta, the 261 b of January,
1786, fo far as rdpedls the fixing
the Scat of the Univcrfity of this
dale ; and an Act for the more
full and complete cftab'iiflbment
of a Public Seat of Learning in
this ftate, fo far as refpefts the
appointment cf Truftees, pafled
at Savannah the 27th of January,
1785. and to appoint a Board
of Truftees, and to define the
JBoaid of Vifitors, and to fix on
a permanent Scat for the faid
Univcrfity paffed the sth day
of December, in the year eigh
teen hundred, it is enafted—
u That Abraham Baldwin, Hugh
Lawfon, Benjamin Taliaferro,
Jolcph Clay, jun. James Jack
fon, John Twiggs, John Clarke,
(of Wilkes) the Rev. Robert M.
Cunningham, John Miiledge,
|ofiah Tatnall, jun. Ferdinand
O'Neal, John Stewart, and
James M'Ncil, (ball compofc
the Board of Truftees ; whole
duty it (hall be to carry this in
dilution completely into cffcO."
And it is further cnafted—-
•* That the Governor, the judges
of the Superior Courts, the Pre
fident of the Senate, the Speaker
of the Houfe of Reprefentatives,
and the Senators from the differ
ent Counties (except the Coun
ties in which the Governor, the
Judges, the Prefident of the Sc
pate, and Speaker of the Houfe
of Reprcfentatives for the time
bring (ball refide) (hall form a
Board of Vifitors, whofe duty
it (hall be to fuperintend and
regulate the literature of this
ftate ; and in particular of the
Public Scat of I earning.”
And whereas ihe General Af
{cmbly paffed a joint refutation
authorizing ?nd empowering the
Governor to iffuc his proclama
tion. requiring the members of
the Senatus Academicus of the
Univcrfity of Georgia, to con
vene at I.ouifville, between the
terms of the Superior Courts,
to take under their confideration
and adopt (uch mealurcs as may
bed promote the objefts of rhat
inftiiution— M And that body at
their conventional affemblagc
during the fitting of the laft
I egiftature, having (txed upon
Jofiah Meigs, cfq then profeffor
of Yale College, in the ftate of
Connefticut, as prefidmg pro
'fcffor of the Univcrfity of the
(late of Georgia, who gratefully
attentive to the call has arrived
with his family among us, and
pcrfonally notified rhe Executive
thereof, and of his defue to
commence on the duties allotted
him.
1 have therefore thought fit
. to iffuc this my proclamation,
requiring the attendance as wdl
of the members of fhe faid Board
of Vifitors as of the members
of the Board of Truftees of the
Univcrfity of this ftate, at the
State-Hoisfc, in 1 ouilville, on
Monday the 15th day of June
next, then and there to foim the
Senatus Academicus, and to
proceed on the important du
ties of the ioftitution according-

known on the Oconee, about
the Dead river, and cape. Swil
ly's diftrift, being the hoife
which was (lolen two >ears and
upwards Cnee from the Chcehaw
King, and paid for by the ftate,
and purcbaled of the ftate by
rhe fubfenber at public fale.
The above reward will be paid
on delivery of the ho;fe at
the plantation, or to
