e l only Angle fhota; that this
hero, at the very moment, and
during the heat of the battle, It at
a flagot truce on fhore tore
quire a ccffation of hoftilities:
When I have to acid the account
I received of two Engiilh fhips
of the line having ftruck, but
that they hoi lied their flags again
&> loon as they were reinforced
by other fhips :—Under thefc
♦ circumftances, I may be per
mitted to fay, that the ancient
fame oi Denmark in naval wars
hath this day fhone forth with
incredible luftre j that I have to
thank heaven for having had all
Europe as a witncTs ro the Tame.
Befides, the balance turned
again ft Denmark in a quarter,
where it was no: likely it Humid.
The fhips that were firft, and to
the fouthof thole moft leveicly
attacked, and even the Provef
teen had almoft all their guns
difmounted, and were obliged
to yield to a fuperior force.
At half paid eleven, the Dan
nebrog line of battle Ihip, dole
to which admiral Ndfon lay for
fome time, was fo much damag
ed, that I went with mv ‘lace on
J O
board the Holftein ; but not
withflandiilg this the Dannebrog
fought under the llreamer that
had been hoifted. At the end
of the battle, Ihe had 270 men
killed and wounded.
At half pad two, the Hol
ftein was fo fhattered, had fo
many killed and wounded, and
fo great a number of guns dif-
O O
mounted, that I caufed the
llreamer to be hoifted inftcad of
my flag; and as the Zeeland
had all her rigging fhot away, I
betook myfclf to the Three
Crown battery, from which
place I commanded the north
wing, which was (lightly engag
ed with admiral Parker’s divi
fion, until I received at 4 o’clock
the orders of your royal high
neTs to keep in the midft of the
battle.
Then that part of the force
which lay to the fouth of the
Three Crown battery, as far as
the frigate Hielpcnen, fell into
the power of the enemy; that
frigate having to contend alone
with a fuperior force, cut her ca
ble and got under way. The
Ihip Elvin, after having receiv
ed levcral fhots, had its mails
and rigging fhattered, and loft a
number of men in killed and
wounded, was brought back into
the Crown by the gun-boats
Nyborg and Aggerfhus, and the
Dannebrog fhorcly after the
battle blew up.
Befldes the Injury which the
enemy evidently has fuftained,
I am convinced their lofs in men
a nd in fhips was very confide -
table. And the advantage of
conquerors confifts only in
*delcfs Ihips, in cannon moftly
fpiked, and in powder thrown
overboard.
The number of the killed and
bounded cannot as yet be giv-
Cri ; but I Tuppofe it may a
ln°unt to 16 or iSco men.
Among the killed, I am griev
to name the commanders of
*!\ c fnip Infodftretten, and the
Cronenburg, cap:. Nil
ra/J> and firft lieutenant Haut,
leveral other brave offi
cer 3- Among the wounded is
E Braun, the commander of the
Dannebrog, who Las loft his
right hand.
1 want language to exprefs my
fen ft* of the unexampled brave
ry of the officers and crews. The
battle itfelf can alone dc[bribe
it.

Nappcr Tandy’s trial at Lif

refilled by the court, and argu

on which Mr. J andv’s council
threw up their brief. Mr. Tan

ftiort but impreffive fpeech,
avowing every tiling ftt forth
in the indidment, and laid his
heart diftiained * a faifehood.
Judge Chamberlain begged he
would weigh well the conft
quence of Inch a declaration :
that ftntence of death muft in

fweretl he was not afraid to
meet death in any fhape ; he
knew well the aweful ftntence of
the law ; he was ready to re
ceive it with the refisnation of
O
a chriftain, and with the firm
nefs and fortitude of a man.
The Judge Chamberlain then
palled ftntence, which is to take
place on the 4th of May.
