Laft evening the dwelling
houfe of the Editors of this pa
per was ftruck with lightning—
it is fuppofed to have firft ftr ick
en the center of the roof and to
have been conveyed by the water
a molt violent rain having pre
ceded it to the edge or fhclvc of
the roof, where it fixed on the
firfl electric fubftance a nail the
head 0 1 which was on examina
tion melted, and where the fluid
entered the upftairs chamber had
burnt a large hole w hich reduced
to a coal was yet warm. After
Tinging the plaifleringand dedoe
work it defeended in a ftraight
line to the lower llory, tore off
the cafing of die front door and
precipitated it with great violence
on a chair where Mils Day one
of the Editors filter was but three
minutes before at work, it then
divided into two branches, one
of which burff through the door
and after fplitcing the flcps en
tered the earth, the other took
its courfe to the kitchen adjoin
ing the houfe, aimoft fuffocatcd
Mifs Day, and ftruck a lervant
to the ground.
It has before this been hinted
in this paper to citizens at large,
never to keep windows or doors
fhut in thunder florms—in all
probability had Mifs Day kept
her ufuai pradicc of opening
them this ftroke of lightning
would h ive gone out of the
upper fiery.
SHOCKING MURDER.
A letter from Bourdeaux, in
ferred in the laft Paris papers,
contains the following account
ofa horrible crime, perpetrated
a few days before in the neigh
bourhood of Blaye ;
A farmer fold fome cattle to
a perfon of that vicinity, at a
certain credit. On the day of
payment, not being able to go
himfelf, herefolvcd to fend his
daughter for the money. The
latter had a lover to whom fhe
had communicated the objed of
herjourney; and it may be na
turally fuppofed that fhc invited
him, and that he promifed to
accompany her. But fcarcely
had he received this proof of his
miftrefs’s confidence, when the
mifcrcant thought of robbing
her of the fum flic was going to
procure. He communicated
thisdefign to three accomplices,
who were of courfe to fiiare in
the booty. Having all four dif
guifed their drefi, and blacken
ed their faces, they proceeded to
lay in wait for the girl, who,
disappointed of her lover’s com
pany, had performed the jour
ney alone, and was now return
ing after fucceeding in her mif
fion. From one of thofe lecrct
prefentiments, which lemetimes
anticipate misfortunes, Ihe had
the precaution to conceal all the
money inker bonnet, except 12
hvres i the robbei s flopped her,
and demanded the money which
'Jif had been to receive j fJic
anlwercd fhe got no more titan
52 livres, which flic offered to
give them j on fearching her,
and rinding no more than two
fix livre pieces in her pocket,
tiny permitted her to continue
her journey; fcarcely had Hie
left them, when the lover recol
iefting himfelf, pretended that
he had not fearchcd her fiifficicnt
ly, and affined that (hey had
been deceived by her; the three
accomplices took the direft
road, while he himfelf taking a
circuit and walking his face in
n brook in Ids way, pretended
that he had come to meet her.
Ihe moment Hie law him,
fhe thought herfelf in fatety, and
immediately told him what had
happened. This convcrfation
took place near a fifh pond. A
fhot was heard, and two fportf
tticn were feen a little dillanee
in ptirfuit of a hare, hearing
that he fhoukl be difappointecl
of his prey, t!ie wtetch afialfi
nated his miflrefs, rut off her
head, which he fuddenly w rapt
up in a handkerchief, and throw*
ing her ffSxiy into the water,
took to flight. Thinking that
the hare had been wounded, the
fportfmcn haltcncd in the fame
diredion; traces of blood led
them to a thicket, behind which
the murderer had concealed
himfelf. 11 is terror, and the
appearance of the handkerchief,
which was covered with blood,
induced them to think that he
had feized the hare. They tore
it from him, but what mull have
been their horror, in finding that
it contained the bleeding head
of a young female. They in
ftandy apprehended the aflaflin,
and conducted him to the jail of
Bourdcaux.
The follow ing is laid to be
the definitive declaration of the
French government relative to
Portugal:
“ That if Portugal fhall not
accede, within eight days, to the
balk of a peace, by ihutcing its
ports to England, and receiving
French or Spanifh garrisons, it
will not be admitted to any fur
ther negociation, but declared a
province of Spain, re-united to
the crown of Spain, and as fuch
guaranteed by the French go
vernment.”
A lingular though by no
means an unprecedented event
has lately occurred in the city
of Walhington. While a per
fon in the city was digging a
well, and had arrived to about
the depth of ten feet, the water
burft m upon him, foon palled
the well to the fur face, ran ra
pidly over, and has continued to
overflow ever fmee in a large,
clear, fountain dream.
