WASHINGTON, June 5.
In a late London Porcupine,
e notice an advertifemenc of
William Cobbett, for printing
by fubfeription <f The writings
and I'eleßions of Peter Porcu
pine completed in twelve vo
lumes octavo.” After fome
preliminary remarks, Mr. Gob
beet obferves— u It will, indeed,
require a reafonable ftock of
patience to go through the
twelve volumes ; but, if anyone
fliould happen to have perfe
verance enough to fuccsed in
the undertaking, I venture to
aflert, that he will derive there
from more information reflect
ing the cuftoms,, the manners,
the morals, the religion, and the
politics of America, than from
all the hiftories and travels that
have ever yet been publifhed.
There is no branch of republican
government, whether legiflativc
or executive, civil or military ;
no right or privilege of the
poor fovereign people, no bau
ble with which he is deceived,
in fhort there arc none of thofe
means by which liberty con
trives, to rob a people of their
freedom, which are not fully ex
plained and expofed in the fa<sbs
that I have difeovered. I have
given a delineation, or rather
have furnifhed the materials
wherewith the reader will be
able to delineate upwards of one
thoufand public characters, and
not a finall number of private
ones.” “ The blind and ob
ftinace advocates for American
liberty, will think me partial and
vindictive ; but I proteft, with
the folemnity and fincerity due
to an oath, that I have not fet
down “ aught in malice,” and
that I harbour not the leaft re
jentment again id America or her
inhabitants. I wifh them all
poffible profperity and happi
ntfs, but I alfo wifh to convince
the world that their profperity
and happiness have not been
augmented by a revolt, though
a luccefsful one, againft the
rnildeft, the moft juft, and moft
virtuous of fovereigns.
“ W. Cobbett.”
Then follows the lift of fub
feribers, viz. 7 Britifh princes i
*3° inhabitants of Great Britain ;
*7s inhabitants of the United
States j 112 inhabitants of Ja
maica ; 45 inhabitants of the
province of Canada, New-Brunf
w*ck, and Nova-Scotia.
f roni this enumeration it will
ke feen, that Mr. Cobbett con
tlmies to derive, whatever pro
ftflions are to the contrary, his
c (htf fupport from the American
wizens, who, though partici
pate g in the full enjoyment of
rights and the exchili ve
benefits of a republican form of
government, are held ferth to
‘ y v orjd as the patron cf a
writer, who dt darts that he
wilhes " to convince mankind,
that their [American] prolperi
ty nor happir.efs have not been
augmented by a revolt, though
a luccefsful one, againft the
mildeft, the moft juft, dnd moft
virtuous of fovereigns.”
