WARNERS FIRE EXTINGUISH
ER.
[Detroit Free Press.[
Mr. Warner, a respectable and law
abiding citizen of Baker street, rode
home in an express wagon the other
day having a hand fire extinguisher and
the driver for company.
“What's that thing?” aske 1 his wife
in contemptuous tones as site opened
the hall door.
“What's tlntt? Why that's a fire
extinguisher—best thing you ever saw
—meant to have got one a year ago."
“Jacob, you are always making a
fool of yourself," she continued as she
shut tlie door. 'Every patent-right
man get around you as a cat lays for a

‘Does, eh? if you know anything
at all you know that every store and
office in Detroit has one o' these. They
have saved lots a’ buildings, and may
save ours.’
‘Von throw it at tlie lire don’t you?’
she asked in sarcastic tones.
lie carried it np-striirs into a closet
without replying, and she followed on
and asked :
‘Does it shoot a fire out?'
‘IF you don't know anything I']{

She grinned as she walked around
it, and finally asked :
'Do you get a horse to draw it
around ?’
’No, L don’t get a horse t.o draw it
around. You see these straps? Well
I back up. put my arms through them,
and here it is on my back.’

Here is a goo-1 nut for the boys to
crack who think ministers are some
times a little officious in asking ques

elsewhere. It is only fair for the boys
to take their turn at questi ning, and
tiie ministers may get fairly cornered.
A well-known clergyman was cross

*.Uy sou, you appear to be a small
boy to steer so large a boat.,’
A e.s, sir. But you see that I can do
it, though.’
‘Do you think you understand your
business, my son?’
‘Yes, sir, l think I do.’
‘Canyon box the compass?’
‘Yes, sir.’
‘Let mo hear you box it.’
Boy boxes compass.
‘Well, really, yon can do it! Let me
hear you box it backward,’
Boy boxes it backward.
‘I declare, my son, you do seem to
understand your business.’
The boy now took IDs turn in question
asking.
‘Pray, sir, wiiat may bo your busi

‘I ain a minister of the Gospel.’
‘Do you understand your business?'
T think I do, my son.’
‘Can you repeat the Lord's Prayer?’
‘Yes. 1
‘Say it.’

Clergyman says he cannot do it.

HIS NEW CATECHISM.
> Bobbie was sitting quietly in the
shadow of the well-house reading a
dime novel; Ilis mother called out to
him five times to bring in some stove
wood, but lie was so absorbed in the
t ide that he imagined that he heard only'
the Indians calling for more wood to
pile around the “AViiite Lilly” about to
be burned at the stake. But his father
came around under tlie woil-houso shad
ow and demanded to know :
‘ (Flint book is that, sir?’
Bobbie remembered that the old man
couldn’t read and that ho was awfully
down on dime novels, to boot, so ho
replied :
•It’s my catechism, sir 1’
‘Exactly!’ said the old man,- and
pointing to the picture on the back:
'What’s that picture thar, sir?’
‘\V by, that s the angel in the burn
ing bush, pa; I thought that you’d
know’d that 1’
Tt s, a nasty, stinking dime novel,
that’s what it. is !’ interposed Bobbie’s
urn.
And the next Tne-iecHt Bobbie was
spinning around like a fellow huim with
a siiti t-collar and the old uian was fan

Eobbie nil these hard conundrums :
•That’s anew kattykism, eh? And

And now I reckin’ yok’. 1 think you are

Or, t neb be you feel like Isak on the

Ami when the old man finished and
Bobbie had carried in tiie wood lie went
down to the horse lot and remarked
that lie lelt like one of the foxes that
set the cornfields afire.
WHAT MEN WANT HAVES FOR.
It is not to sweep the house, make
t.te beds,, darn the socks and cook the
meals, chiefly that a man wants a wife.
If this is all, when a young man calls
to see a lady show him into the pantry
to taste the bread and cake she has
made, and] send him to inspect the
needle-work and bed-making, or put a
broom in Iter hand, and send him to
witness its use. Such tilings are very
important, and the wise young man
will quickly look after them; but
vvhat a young man wants of a wife is
her compani, nship, sympathy aud love.
Lhe way ol life has many dreary places
in it, and mail needs a companion to
go with him A man is sometimes over
taken by misfortune; he meets with
failure aatl defeat; temptations and
trials beset him, and he wants one to
stand by aud sympathise. lie has some
hard battles to fight with poverty,
and lie needs a woman that, when he
puts his arm around her, ho feels that
lie has something to fight for, for site
will help him to fight,; that she will put
her lips to his ear and whisper words
of counsel, and put her hand to his heart
and impart inspiration. All through
liie, through storms and tempests, and
through sunshine, conflicts ami victory,
through adverse and through favoring
winds, man needs a woman's love- A
mother and sister's love will hardly sup
ply that need. Yet many seek fur
nothing further than success in house
work. Justly enough, halt of the kin l

prised beyond a measure, have gotten
more than they sought, for their wives
surprised them by bringing out a noble
idea in marriage ar.d disclosin g a

Wlie*e is the money to coma from?
Family expenses in these days of ex

startling to the mind and soul of the
money supplyer, the work horse that
turns the mill which is expected to turn
out greenbacks in unlimited profusion.
Children and wivei have united in the
positive conclusion that all fathers and
husbands are “made of money,” and
they act by unanimous understanding
accordingly ; while the sufferer only

is it that his family manage to get rid
of so much and receive in exchange for
it so little. Ilis wife is vulgarly attired,
his sons are half educated, and his
daughters can hardly flirt creditably
and cannot spell at all, and yet they
spend their twenty thousand a year with
facility.
