The Two Best Papers.—We have
► j..., completed arrangements, by which
we are enabled to offer tbs' Weekly Morn
ing News, of Savannah, and tlie News &
Farmer, the two best papers in the
State, for only THREE DOLLARS per
annum, postage all paid by the publish

will close on the first day of January.
To day.—On to-day there is a sale
at Old Town, many have gone from this
place. There will be some fine stock
sold there, for it has for a long time
been the tramping ground of some ex
cellent cattle, and the flue range has en
couraged their excellence. No doubt
some of our townsmen will buy them
selves rich.
* Not Too Late.—Christmas week is
said to be a splendid time to sow oats,
so all Who have not put in quite enough
Viiiali grain, and those who have not yet
planted any, (but we judge this number
is few), will certainly catch time by the

Hard Times. —Notwithstanding the
cry of hardtiiiies is bciug carried from
one part c[ the country to ( the other as
it were on the very wings of the winds,
siill there ‘are signs of life in the laud
that are immpst ikable. Trade is a lit
tle dull and cotton is low, but farmers
do not s > m.lo, be discouraged, but on
the hand quite hopeful. There are too
distinct parts of the county that is buil
ding up rapidly with stores.and new
houses viz., .Stellaville ‘ and’ New IL'th
uuy, and many other signs of vigor.
Parties Over the River.—Tuesday
night there was a party at Bethany' and
one at Mr. Samuel Tarvers. Sociables
are becoming thick here and there,, and
the average young man is enjoying him
self to the best possible advantage.—
was largly represented. One
4 young man, who we will not mention
the name of, but who is usually pretty
%ood on the watch had not gone more
than one hundred yards from town
before the buggy turned topsy i urvev
and somehow or other he oouldn’t
stick. Another detachment found them
selves out of the road in thepiny woods,
and had to form a torch light procession
to get home. There is no accounting for
Louisvillians. We would reccoinmend
>tiiat the county set aside a sum for their
special protection during the dark
flights.
lloiv to Amuse the Children.—
Parents are often at a loss to find amuse
ment for the young people, which will
at the same time, instruct their minds,
cultivate the taste, and give them an
appreciation, for the beautiful.

OUR NEW YORK LETTER.
The Arcadian Dinner. JoAQuiN
Miller.—Corn-Popping Extraor
dinary.—s6o,o3o per Alonth from
the Northern Pacific, —“Bio. 6.”
[From Our Own Correspondent.J
New York, Dec. 18, 1875.
To the Editors of the News 4- Farmer
New York, just at present, is well
supplied with literary celebrities, a lib
eral sprinkling of whom appeared at
the unusually brilliant dinner given by
the Arcadian Club a few evenings
since at their elegant rooms on Fifth
Avenue. Among the distiguished per
sons whose presence contibuted to the
interest of the occasion were the ven
erable Peter Cooper, one of the few
reinaing landmarks, so to speak, of old
New York; AI. 1). Conway, Prentice
D. Alulford, of the “Overland Mouth
ly,” Laurence Hutton, author of “Flays
arid PlayersC. H. Webb, better
known as “John Paul;” and last, but
riot least, Joaquin Miller. From the
general drift of newspaper paragraphs
I had prepared myself to see m this
illustrious person a sort of mixture ot
Lord Bj‘on and “Buffalo mu, and on
• outoringthc reception-room looked over
the assemblage of black coats and
white ties, in pleasurable expectancy
that my eye would he caught by long,
coal-black locks, flowing over the shoul
der of a red hunting shirt, hounded on
the south by a leathern belt, filled with
implements of warfare, and supporting
buckskin breeches, which in turn
should disappear in'high, big-spurred
boots, all in accordance with tne pic
ture my fancy had painted of the “Poet
of the Sierras.” Not seeing anything
of the soi”, I at once concluded that
the lion had not arrived, and turned to
speak to an acquaintance by whom i
was introduced to several of the group
in which If .uud him. Among these
was one gentleman whose name I did.
catch, but who, from his general ap
pearauce, I judged to be a business
man of some kind—a middled-aged
person, with high cheek-bones, reddish
brown- whiskers, and thin, short hair of
the same color, who ext uiled his hand
in an absent sort of a way, and after a
word or two about the weather, reldpsed
into silence, leaving me to resume my
search for tlie picturesque poet at my
leisure. A few inquiries shortly after
revealed the somewhat staggering fact
that I had been “entertaining -angels
unawares,” or words to tiiat effect, mid
that my business friend was none other
than the romantic genius himself. o n
learning this, I of course regarded
him more closely', to discover, if possi
ble, some outward signs of the Prome
thean fire ; but beyond a military twirl
to his mustache, and the wearing of an
immense cluster diamond ring on his
forefinger, I must confess that 1 found
little to compensate me for the loss of
my red-shirted ideal.
Seeking for a simile to illustrate the
change which lias come over our streets
during the past lew days, I can only
think of the city as a big corn-popper,
which lias just? arrived at the tempera
ture necessary to the wonderful trans
formations which accompany the oper
ation indicated. It may be a homely
comparison, I admit, but it fits the case
amlrably. First one store would burst
into holiday display, then another, then
two, three, ten, fifty’ at a time, till now
the whole retail portion of the eriy is
as plump and tempting as. the most
successful popper-full that ever was
snatched from the fire in the n’ck of
For these few exhilarating days,
the retail merchants are having a re->t
frojn grumbling, and are feasting their
eyes on crowded counters ami plethor
ic tills, while the thought of the little
folks and big folks which these myriad
purchases will soon make glad, is
enough to warm the heart of a cynic.
Everybody is doing well, and in the
. rase of the largest dealers in the dif
ferent branches the volume of busi--
ness is exceptionally heavy. The Ma
son & Hamlin Oorgan Cos., for example,
who are the leading house of the kind
in the world, report a demand which is
temporarily beyond their Capacity’ to
supply, though their case is, of course,
exceptional, they having, in adition to
this sudden local pressure, a regular
trade in nearly every’ civilized country
on the globe. For years they have en
joyed almost unquestioned superiority
at home, while few American manu
facturers of any kind have reflected so
much honor on their country abroad.
At London, at Haris, at Vienna, wher
ever their instruments have been ex
hibited, they have, by sheer force of
merit, triumphed even over national
pride, and received the.highest distinc
tion in every- case. In almost any
other industry at least two or three
manufacturers will be found whose
claims are so nearly equal that the
foremost position is not definitely as
signed ; but the name of Alason &
Hamlin upon a reed organ is what the
stamp of twenty-four karats Jiiie is to,
the golden ingot. There call be but
one such, and that indicates unap
proachable excellence.
Net an unimportant part of the. bus
iness that’s now going on is tlie fur
nishing of Christinas trees for Santa
Claus to cover with his mystarious
blossoms. Thousands of them are ar
riving 'daily, from the humble little
shrub, which one involuntarily associ
ates with the garret lodgings, to the
large spruces which will blaze and glit
ter at more pretentious festivities. But
great or small, they’ all mean good
times for somebody, which, let qs hope,
will be fully realized.
If any of 4 ,y)u:' : rcader3 have invested
in,Northern Pacific bonds, it may inter
est them, toileani that Mr. Jay Cooke
has just been.-heard from on the sub
ject, and that lie is as confident as ever
of the future success of the railroad
which swallowed up his great fortune
and brought him to bankruptcy’. lie
says it now occupies the proudest po
sition of any’ road in the country’, being
entirely free from debt, and making on
the traffic of its two, completed- ends
§OO,OOO a month net profit.
Mr. Tweed still delays.sending his
address to his anxious friends. The
lawers. are wrangling over Ins caae in
the courts, however, as busily as ever,
reminding one forcibly of a lot of
quarrelsome. squirrels chattering over
an empty nutshell. The present popu
lar theory’ about him is, that, having
decided tiiat he could better negotiate
with the city’ outside of prison walls
than inside of them, he quietly betook
himself to some convenient hiding
place, perhaps under our very noses,
and there awaits developments, Should
Hr- Charles O'CcLpr ' recover
(which, strange to say, now looks prob"
able) and be aide to go on pressing his
proposed §2,000,000 compromise, we
iqav confidently expect to see “Big 6”
coine striding back into our midst,
bland and smiling as though nothing
had occurred, ready to forget and for
give his persecutions at the hands of
the now vanquished. metropolis. But
should Mr. O'Conner die, or negotia
tions fail for any other reason, it is
likely that tlie particulars of this dis
appearance will remain among the
things that “no fell,of can find out.”
