SPREAD OAK GRANGE. Stapleton's Store. On lust Friday it was otir privilege and our pleasure to attend tho Grange at Stapleton’s stare, called very appro priately Spread Oak Grange, for here several large oaks stretch out their sheltering arms and canopy under their protecting pavilion the immediate sur roundings of the tasteful hall. The hail is anew one, and while it is not spacious, it is well finished, furnishing a cosy place for meeting, with ante room, and with a verandah above, that overlooks the grounds and tho delight ful prospect in the farther distance. As we stood there looking at the throng below, and out on the bare fields and the brown forresfcs beyond them, we could not help thinking, what a beautiful picture this would he in the glad sum mer time, with the green corn waving in the soft wind—teeming vegetation everywhere full of the promises of fruit time, and this glorious picture of na ture alive and aglow with sunlight, en cased by tho a Imiratiou and gratitude of a rural people. This is the first hall that has been built by a Grange in the county, and the only one, and below is a store room for grange supplies. But lam a little a head of the music. In a short time J after I arrived I was cordially welcom ed, and invited into the Grange Meet ing by Capt. I. F. Adkins. Wo found that there was quite a number already i arrived, and still they continued to pour j in until the room was full to overflow ing. Col. Jas. Stapleton was the Alas-; tor of this Grange and is a working man. Capt. Adkins and son, and a gentleman we <lid not know, formed a musical trio, with flute and violins, that was nothing less than inspiring. There was an initiation and it was well con ducted. Several parties were called up "it to speak, Air. -T. G. Jordan among the rest, lie simply stated that he was no speaker, hut said that his heart was j made glad by the interest di splayed by this Grange, superinduce ! by the con trast with his own. Air. Kelly, of Gbi son or near there, made some very ap propriate remarks, and f.o did Col.! .Slapleton, in encouragement to hi”.' Grange. She gave liar encour agement often. She is a bright child with bright hair, and a bright face; with a heart full of tho loved ones at home; but it reaches farther out,'and in her holidays she bethought herself how she could be most happy by mak ing others so. Site sold the quilt, and with tho pro cion) proceeds she bought the pastor’s children each a present, perhaps not in absolute value so priceless, but in the wealth of her inuoeent, pure, benevo-l lent being, and in the grateful leruem- j brances thus germinated, they will grow i into incalculable treasure loss beneficence; Not that they worn needy, not flm but' they were her dear pastor's ohiMre’n.! and sha was one of tin; lambs odAs flock, that ho had led “by too still Jj-i ters.” _ _ 4. On Christmas IP'S as was previon dy annonneed, there ras a Christmas tree arranged for tno children, an I at an early hour the Pythian Hall was lit up with light resplendent, gleaming oiutim decorations that adorned the beairfcful green holly, and |he many presents that had been placed there by tits hands of kind, considerate friends, by pa rents, and many others who never for get wiiat they owe to childhood and its happiest hours ; and children were not alone the recipients of favors, but the young ladies for the most part received souvenoira which-lio doubt they will treasure a3 sacred mementoes of the eventful occasion, and the donors— j gifts prompted as they wore no don it by j abiding esteem. —ofteut mas perchau te | by a higher feeling, if they ever find out who gave them, which they will be j most likely to do. The young men too ! received a few toys, and occasionally a ! a rag doll. Such things at sucii a time j will of course cause them to treasure such favors as precious gifts. There was a htryethrowj present, but we are sorry indeed that sum: 1 Ullin girls were kept away, because they were either overlooked, or left out hun t col' i. Below there was a sumptu its sniper an t light gleamed on the ricaly carve i I ware and costly glass that held rare viands and delicacies as well as l moats elegantly prepared. Airs. A. These social gatherings are very en hvining and pleasant, atul wo hope are always so conducted as not to be at anytime hurtful. We .visit the young people many more happy and pleasant occasions. For you LI.MIf go to Little & Cos. Ebenezer.—()n 1 1 jt Saturday,(Christ tnas day), the people of the neighbor hood, the members of that church, and the Good Templars, met at Fbeneozer. Tuere was a splendid sermon from Dr. Phillips. lie entered into an elaborate disour.se, and illustration of .vhat was meant by oracles as given to the jews in olden time, showing conclusively taht they were favored—the favored of (l od, and that they were responsible for thn great privileges and promises that had been showered upon them, inas much as there has boon a way opened up for them, “because unto you are given the oracles. 1 ’ Ho showed hmv that the heathen had never received the oracles, or the plan and means of sal vation, and consequently could not em brace what had never been put in their reach, and preseuten to us in a striking light the importance of our not neglee-' ting, what had been so beneftciontly showeron on us by a gracious provi dence. W'e have not space to follow up the splendid sermon, but it was very searching an l graphic's. After preach ing. there was a macmificeut dinner spread out beautiful, but now bare grove. After 'r.
