FROM HADLEY.
Wadlev, 100 C. li. It., Ga , )
Apr 1 2ti, 1876. J
Messrs. Editors: In my last letter to
y< iif- paper, I predicted that we were
I on the eve of squally- times, iiu I did
j not think tjieu that ttie squalling would
! amount to much. It happened, how
i ever, that on last night, about 8 o’clock,
; tiiere was a squall, a regular northern
‘ er. and now. sir*, we claim that we
j have a right to ho admitted into full
| fellowship with any and every other
| one horse town in Georgia, or else
| where.
Last Christmas, we had a first-class
riot to begin with, and we instantly
set about getting our gable ends and
j their surroundings incorporated into a
I town. We succeeded. Then we held
! ail election for Mayor and Aldermen,
and got through with that laborious job
smoothly. The next thing necessary
to constitute- a full Hedged town, was
to get up a first class shooting frolic.
We have succeeded, and now we are a
town among towns Yes, sirs, Lee Bat
tie took-his little pistol and went over
to 11. A. McLeod’s store, last night,
and before he-left tie made a very forci
ble impression on Air. McLeod’s crani
um with the contents of the aforesaid
j little pistol. Fortunately, however,
. Mr. McLeod is a very hard headed
I man, and the balls only made scalp
| wounds. He is doing well, and will be
| out in a lew days. Battle vamoused
the ranclie. and did not leave us a lock
of his hair to deposit among the ar
chives of our town. I hope our worthy
mayor and his council-men will have a
blank page inscribed to his memory,
and make a special appeal to the •‘lion,
l’otiphor l’cagreen, of Tuga or,” to al
low L. K. Battle to peddle without
license. What caused the difficulty
between Messrs. Battle and McLeod, 1
am unable to learn. I suppose they
i both know, and neither of them know
| it (ho same way. Such is generally
j the case in other towjis further ad-
I vaneed than ours is in civilization,
j A little son of Mg. Rooert B. Gary
I got a, very serious fall from a horse
■ near Bethany, on Monday evening last,
I and has been unconscious ever since.
! He .if. fearfully hurt on the left side of
iiia head, and his recovery is very
doubtful.
“Col.” Geo. G. Johnson lias taken
| unto himself a wife. By the way, tile
| “Colonel" is now leader of a Bible
j class at the* Baptist church, every ,Sab
' bath evening. He has suddenly be
j come very zealous in the cause, and we
! hope it will, be permanent. We think
he would do. some good in the world if
he coul I just be kept under the hack
all the time The poor fellow has fixed
liiimelf now, however, and if is very
likely he will remain leader of a Bible
class for some time to come. A fool
man never knows when lie is doing
well, though. But this is leap year,
Centennial, etc., and the aged dames
are making good use ot their opportu
| nity. l’oor George! Good bye old
friend ! Try and save your back hair
; if you.can. You haveonr sympathies,
and wc drop a tear.
Mr. Wm, Donovan’s academy in our
1 town is approaching completion. He
| is having a very handsome two-story
: building put up, and i.s having it done
! in good style. Mr. Douivivi is tiie
j main stake of this place. But for his
\ enterprise, it would now be a frog
I pond. But he needs no praise from
I me. He merits all that can be bestowed
upon him, and more too.
“Wadi.ey.”
[P. S.l The Enterprise remarked,
recently, "Wadley has the best post
master south of the north pole.” Tiie
aforesaid postmaster has suddenly gone
on a trip to the north pale, to interview
tiie post in:i ders along the route to as
! certain if the assertion above mioted
is correct. When lie returns, we will
give you his report in full W.
L tile Charley, the son of Mir. R. B.
Gary, spoken of in the above, died on
the 28th, from the injuries received.
• • - ....
"Leapyear!” said he as he threw
i himself indolently upon the lounge,
"Oh, don’t L wish I was a pretty tael
nating stunner of agirl! I’d have all
my clothes cut l’tcr tiie “Domestic
Fashio is” and just heap the style on.
An I wouldn’t Lpile on. the duds and
wear a, big bustle? Oil no. 111!
OUCH!” and just here his father, as
lie led him,opt bv the ear, said, * Young
man, if you douit climb out'n this and
make a big bustle in tl o neighborhood
of that woodpile I’ll fix you so’s you
couldn’t wear a bustle for a month.”
