We regret to hear of the death of
Mr Spencer Spear near Bartow,
Jfiss Spear his sister also died on
the day following the death of her
Brother.
Death has also .claimed another vic
tim in that section the wife of and Es
teemed citizen and prominent mer
chant ,W ,C Smith.
The bereaved have opr deepest sym

Deceased was born in Washington
county Ga.whpre he was raised and
livd until last winter, when with his
family, which consists of a widowed
mother, brother, and two sisters, he
moved to Wadley, at which place he
died. His troubles were interraitent
fever, conjastion ol the lungs and
pneumonia ponbitied, Every aid which
could we rendered by medical skill was
tried, having two good physicians in
attendance and friends to. minister to
his wants, but to no avail Ho was
brought up under the precepts and ex
amples of pious and intelligent parents
and his life was a reward for their
efforts. He joined the Baptist Church
at Antioch in Washington county in
1875 and lived a consistent member ol
that phuroh until Maron 1881, when he
removed Ids membership to /Fadley
church at whiph place his remains were
buried, the funeral being conducted by
Dr. Leouard. ln speakiug of his vir*
toes the writer pan say from personal
knowledge that hp posseaed a vp.y Hind
disposition, was charitable to those
wh) differed in opinion with him, was
always ready to forgive an offence let
it be ever so grave , and ever willing to
lend a helping hand to those in need
or distress. Ho leaves a widowed
mother of .-whom he is the youngest
ch Id, two brothers and two sisters and
a hostmf relaitives and dear fiiendsto
mourn bis early death. Bile was 'he
family favorite , the mother’s eartidy
joy, but the lias crossed over the r\.ve;,
so w ep not dear aunt. We hope soon
to meat him or the beaut iul shore be
yond , and I here rest with him uudei

John Johnson sworn said:—While
in the building, Moses said, we will
stop them from walking between our
beds. Then P.eijjontie took an unoc
cupied bed, Dan Mimes sai l to Pie
montie not to annoy Inn. Deceased
spoke to Moses but e >i.! 1 not under,
stand ivlial deceased -aid . Moses was
lying down then, jumped up and then
walked deceased. Moses t.lier
stood there shaking his finger in de
c ased face several times, and c >ntinu

stick ami returned to bunk. Moses
then lay down. Piemoutie then got on
stick and struck at

his hand, seen no knife in his hand

Piemontie down. D ceased tried to
strike at Moses. Diu not see him hit

fell off bunk and in a few minutes died.
1 was about 12 feet of deceased ana
Dan Moses when they began their
scnilie. I suppose it was about 10
o’clock a ra on August 2lst 1881,
Steve Williams -worn said. —l and
deceased were on same bunk. Moses
began to abuse deceased. Th'eatened
to kill him, M >ses drew his knife—saw
about 3 inches of his knife, and saw
Moses strike deceased with knife.
Moses had a barlow knife and a white
handled knife. After deceased fell to
floor he wiped the blade and put it in
his valise. This was all done in Old
Town Stockade, Deceased jobed
stick al Moses and then Moses done
what I have said before. This is all
1 know. This all ocoured about 10
o’clock a m August 21st 81.

the floor and heard someone say part
them lake him off. Saw Moses with
knife in his right hand (two knives
were shown to wi ness and said knife
looked a little like them.) Deceased
first fell on the bunk aid ihen on the
floor- This was done accord ng to
deceased watch, between 10 and 11
o’clock am. All this was done nt Old
Town Camp in Jefferson county Ga.

40 feet from deceased :md Moses and
deceased struck Moses first (stick
shown to witness and saw Moses catch
deceased and strike deceased several
times with knife, could not see from

Win Coker sworn said—l was si'-

of a knife, did not see the handle of
the knife. The stick deceased struck

was done on Sunday morning about
10 o’clock at Old Town Stockade.
Ely Mathews sworn said-Dan Moses
was lying dowu and deceased came
to Moses butik, Moses said to deceased
I don’t want you about me. De
ceased being an Italian I could not
qqdersland him but I thought he was
cursing him, Moses. Deceased struck
Moses oq the bead With a stick about
S feet long one inch in diameter. Then
Moses struck at deceased several times
with kutfe. 1 saw about 2 inches of a
knife,could not tell wnetker it was a
pocket knife or what sort. This l
think was dj-ie about 11 o’clock a m.
August 21st 1881. Saw Moses cut
deceased in etomaeh with knife, next
near the heart and after he was cut he
'av down and died in about 20 minutes
as ne-r as I can judge . I am certain
that Moses started with deceased first.
