My Baby.
Nestled so close to my bosom,
Cradled to sleep on my arm
Would I might always le near thee,
Shelter thee thus from all harm.
Sweet Ik; the slumbers that follow,
Tinged with no shade of unrest;
Free from the false and the hollow,
Pure as a dream of the blest.
Sin hath no share in thy bosom,
Sorrow no shade oil thy brow.
Would they might always be spotless,
Free from life's shadows as now.
Kneeling at eve-tide beside thee,
She who bath lulled thee to rest
Prtvoth no ill may betide thee,
Sowing its seed in thy breast.

The visjtors at the Natural Bridge,
Rockingham county, Va., representing
several States of the Union, and the cit
izens of that vicinity, have, through a
committee, of which Col. H. C. Parsons
was chairman, prepared a letter to Mrs.
Garfield, congratulating her upon the
prospect of the President, and express
ing their admiration for the faith and
courage displayed by her, and express
ing the belief that, tho attempted assass

feel that they are members of one fam

cause of reconciliation than all the writ

ended. Tho teachers and pupils of the

a visit to the Natural Bridge, have pre
pared to accompany the letter with a
number of sketches of the locality, the
whole to be put in the form of an album
and forwarded to Mrs. Garfield through
Mrs. Blaine. It will bo quite a unique
and certainly an artistic and loving con

ple’s detestation lyc the crime and their
admiration of Mr. and Mrs. Garfield.

Recipes.
Peach Butter.— Parc ripe peaches
and put them in n preserving kettle,
with sufficient water to boil them soft;
then sift through a cullendar, removing
the stones. To each quart of peach
put ono and one-half pound sugar, and
boil very slowly one hour. Stir often,
and do not let them burn. Put in
stone or glass jars and keep in a cool
place.
Raspberry Jam. —To every quart of
ripe raspberries, allow a pound of the
best loaf sugar. Put sugar and berries
into a pan, and let them stand two or
three hours. Then boil them in a por
celain kettle, taking off the scum care
fully. When no more scum rises,
mash them and boil them to smooth
marmalade. When cold, put them in
glass tumblers.
Stewed Cucumbers. —Cut the encum
bers fully half au inch thick right
through; put them in a sauce pan, just
covering them with hot water, and let
tlil'm boil slowly for a quarter of an
hour, or until tender, but not so as to
break them; then drain them; you
want now a pint of good cream, and put
your cream, with a teaspoonful of but
ter, in a sauce-pan, and when it is warm
pop in the encumbers; season with
a little salt and white pepper, cook five
minutes, shaking the saucepan all tho
time, and servo hot. It is just as deli

indeed.

“Wo have frequent communications,”
says the AmericanCultivatar, “from our
subscribers concerning the fact of their
cows giving bloody milk. No one
would be surprised at cows giving
bloody milk if they were fully aware of
what a network of blood vessels the
I udder of a cow is composed. No person
j should ever make an attempt to milk a
cow till they have obtained some know
j h’dge ot its structure; then we perhaps
should dispense with a large number
, of those double-listed men who do not
seem to have any knowledge of the
| purposes or anatomy of a cow’s bag, ex
i cept for them to squeeze and drag it as
though it were a piece of dead hide.
I here is no objection to the strong
handed man as a milker, the stronger
the better, but it should be accompanied
by a touch as delicato as a woman’s.
Whenever thecow manifests the slight
est sensitiveness the udder should be
thoroughly examined. Milking is a
pleasure to the cow when everything
is all right, and whenever it ceases to
afford gratification to the cow there is
evidently something wrong. Never
fail to wash with warm water the bag of
a young heifer,, both bofore and after
milking." •
