Farmers, Ginners and The Ameri
can Cotton Cos. Share Roundlap
Savings.
Certain Southern papers are pub
lishtng articles designed to prejudice
against the roundlap bale those who
do not know their origin or purpose.
They are paid for by the square bale
compress association, whose interest
is, not that the farmer’s cotton
shall be baled in the way that will
biing him the most mono}', but th t
it shall bo put in bales that w ill
have to to be compressed. The pei -
pie ol the South aie not to be caught
with such chaff, ihe favor with
Inch the rounuiap bale is received
wherever it has Peon introduced is
due to its merits alone, and to the
fact that the producer receives
more money for his cotton in this
form than in any other package.
He will continue to use the round’
lap bale so long as he finds it profi
table, and no longer.
The interests of the farmer, the
gmuer and American Cotton Com
pany are identical
The farmer has his cotton put up
in roumllap bales because the sav
ings which accrue to their market
ing enable the buyer to pay him a
premium sufficient to pay the bal
mg charge and leave him a sub
stautiai protii besides.
Aruch as comprcssmen would lik<
to have larmers believe otherwise
the Americau Cotton Company
has no purpose further than to se
cure for itsslf a share of these sav
ings. Its interest lies in enabling
the presses which it builds to bale
as much of the Southern cotton
crop as possible. In order to insure
this result it is essential that cot
ton growers find profit in the use ol
these presses, or they would not
patronize them. To this end, and in
order that the lull savings of which
roundlap bales are capable might be
realized, the American Cotton Com
pany becomes buyer of roundlap
bales, paying lor them a premium
above the market value bf square
bales. Thus the rental which the
company charges for the use of ns
presses by ginners who prefer lease
t-> purchase, is paid by neither the
funner nor the ginner, but
by the cotton buyer (whether the
American Cottau Company or some
other) and it is paid out ol the sav
ings.
•Beyond insuring UiaL cotton in
roundlap bales shall in all eases sell
toi the premium to which it is en
tit ta and which is paid for it at
the mills, the company does not go.
1' ci in n agitemeni docs not re
l U| ie that a single bale ol cot
ton nc sold to the American
Cotton Company. Ginnrrs are
fice to buy or lease presseses,
anu every roundlap bale, with
all ol its advantages, can be bought
in open competition by any respon
sible buyer and handled through
to the mills, with all of the rcsul'-
aut savings, but whenever the ordi
n.ay cotton buyer declines to pur
chase loandlap bales on this basis,
the American Cotton Company
sianus pledged to buy them.
1 he farmer who patronizes a round
lap gin plant may retain as com
pletu control over his cotton as if he
took it to an old-sty.c giniiousc. If j
he does not wish to sell his cotton j
he can have it custom ginned and
keep his roundlap bales until such i
time as he is ready to dispose ol
them, with the assurance, that they
are always salable at the full mark
*■- 'nluc ot the cotton, plus an lu-
cieaseu price because it is in round
lap bales. Ii he likes he can arrange
wnh the roundlap ginner to ship Ins
co.ion to the American Cotton Com
paoy to be held foi him and, under
ad ordinary circumstances, draw a
gambi it to 80 per cent, ol its value,
i he American Cotton Company has
in this way largely assisetd those
who desired to hold tueir cotton. Iu
