WALTER STAPLETON CALLED HOME On the morning of April the tenth our litle city was greatly shocked by the sudden death of our brother J. Wal ter Stapleton. Air. Stapleton was six ty-five years of age, being the eldest son of the late Colonel James Staple ton. The Stapletons are among the most prominent families in Jefferson county. Our sorrows are deep because we shall miss him so much not only in our church, but also in the town and community at large, and our hearts go out in sympathy to those who must ever see his vacant chair and miss his kind words of comfort and cheer. We can only point them to the one who is too wise to make a mistake and too good to be unkind. To know brother Staple ton was to love him. Hi* will be missed by rich and poor alike as he never turned a deaf ear to a worthy cause. Beside the many friends to mourn his loss he leaves.a widow and four children as follows: Mrs. W. V. Wal den of Grange, Mrs. S L Price of Por tal, Air. Willis Stapleton and Miss Julia Stapleton, and three brothers and two sisters, Alessrs. James, Albert k and John Stapleton, Mrs. J. W. THE NEWS & FARMER, THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 1919 Gaster fires j Easter fires, established in 1 honor of the sun, form a fea- 1 i ture of Easter observance in ; some parts of Great Britain, where bonfires are quite com mon in early spring. Effigies of Judas were annually burn ed in Athens on Easter Sun day until the government pro hibited it. Frazer in “The Golden Bough” states that about 100 years ago the custom at Al thenneberg, in upper Bavaria, was as follows: On the after noon of Easter Saturday boys collected wood, which they piled in a cornfield, while in the middle of the pile they set up a tall wooden cross all swathed in straw. After the evening service they lighted lanterns at the consecrated can dle in the church and ran with them at full speed to the pyre. The first to arrive set fire to the heap. No woman or girl 1 might come near the bonfire, ! but both could watch it from ; a distance. As the flames rose I the men and lads shouted, "We | are burning the Judas!” GEORGIA —Jefferson Count.
