G-tds BLANK DEEDS, For Sals at this Office, Foreign Office, March 14, 1810. SIR, THE letter which I had the honor to receive from you under date of 2d January, toge ther with tile additional para graph received on the 24th Ja nuary, has been laid before the king. The feveral conferences which I have held with you relpe&ing the tranfadions to which your letter refers, have, I trult, latis fied you, that, it is the fincere defire of his Majefty’s govern incut, on the prefent occafion, to avoid any dilculFion which might obftrud the renewal of amicable intercourfe between the two countries. The correfpondence between Mr. Jackfon and Mr. Smith has been lubmitted to his Majdty’s (.wdideration. U lited States, by any exprdli- on contained in his letters, or by any part of his condud. The exprtffi >ns and condud of his lv] jelly’s Minifter in A- merica having however, appear ed to the government of the li nked States to be exceptionable, the ufual courle in luch cafes: would have been, to convey, in the fii lt inltance, to his Mnjdty, a formal complaint againft his vlmiiter, and to defire fuel) re bels, as might be deemed fuita-. bin to the nature of the alledgcd offence. This courfe of proceeding would have enabled his M. jolty to have mane fu. h arrangements; or to have offered fuch fealona- ble explanations, as might h ive precluded the inconvenience, which rat’d always arife from the fiifpenfiua of official communica tion between friendly powers. His Majefty however is always difpofed to pay the utmoft atten tion to the wifhes and ftnrim nts Hates in amity with him ; and ho has therefore been pleafed to di- red the return of Mr. Jackfon to England. But his M.iji fiy has not nark ed, with any expn flion of his difpleafure, the condud of Mr. Jackfon ; whole integrity, zeal and ability h ive long been dif- tinguuTwd in his Maj dly’s fer- vice; and who does not appear, on the prefent occafion, to have committed any intentional of fence againft the government of the United Stales. I am commanded to inform you, that Mr. Jackfon is order ed to deliver over the charge of his Majefty’s affairs in America, to a perfon properly qualified to carry on the ordinary intercourfe between the two governments, which his Majelty’s is fincerely defirous of cultivating on the molt friendly terms. As an additional feftimony of this dilpofition, I am authorifed to cfl'ureyou, that his Majefty is ready to receive, with fentunents of undiminifhed amity and good will, any communication which the government of the United States may deem beneficial to the mutual interefl of both coun tries, through a y channel of negociation which may appear advantageous to that govern ment I requeft that you will accept the affirmances of the high confi- deration with which 1 have thd* honor to be, SIR, Your moft obedient and Humble lervant, (Signed) WELLESLEY.
