The following Epitaph 011 a Miser, con
tains a good caution.
Reader, beware immoderate love of
PELF,
Here lies the word of thieves, who
robb’d HIMSELF.
From the New York Columbian,
Mr Editor,
1 generally make it a rule to
read a few paragraphs in fome of our
federal papers, every night before f
go to bed ; this I am induced to do
from the narcotic effect produced by
them, as I ana fcarcely able to read
a dozen lines in any of them without
falling afleep. La It night, after read
ing ten lines and a half in one of
them, I fell into a profound deep, &
had the following remarkable dream.
I bought that I was (landing in
London, near where the equeftiian
flatue cf Charles the firft is erefted
On a hidden the fword, buckles,
ftraps, fee fell from it, and were
picked up by a porter who carried
them away. While 1 was niufing on
this accident, methought that the ge
nius of England appeared to me, and
add re fled me thus, “ Stranger, why
(land you thus loft in wonder ? The
flatue ymi fee is emblematical of the
king. The fword which you faw
fall, is the emblem of power; the
buckles and ftraps are the trappings
of royalty. As you faw them fall
from the flatue, and faw them taken
by one of tire people, fo {hall you ere
long fee the people afthme that pow
er which is theirs of right. Soon
flia’l you fee the fword of power
vrefted from the hands of one who
is unworthy to hold it. Already has
it commenced Sir Francis Burdett,
tire defender of the people’s rights,
is unlawfully confined in the tower.
He fhall be fet free. lie fhall obtain
a glorious triumph over Iris enemies.
He fhall”
At this moment I awoke, S: could
not help reflecting on the Angularity
of the dream, a., I find by a morning
paper that the fword actually fell off.
It is faid that before the American
revolution the richeft. jewel in the
king of G. Britain’s crown fell out,
after this it is well known he loft
fome of his richeft pofl'eflions. Whe
ther he is now going to lofe his pow
er or r.ot, time will determine.

It is the fate of fome names,

The Emperor of China, it is
faiJ, has never been perfeftly
reconciled to the Britifh fmee
the proceedingswhich took place
at Macao laft year, under the
orders of Admiral Drury.—
When the laft advices came a-
way, Britifh Chips were not per
mitted to proceed up to Canton,
as ufual. Oil reprefentations
being made, a chop had been
procured from the Emperor who
was at Pekin, to fufier Britifh
fhips to bring up at the fecond
bar, but not to unload till further
orders. Thus by the villainous
conduct of cur government we
have to bow the knee to thofe
we once infulted ; and we are
too well acquainted with the
manners, cuftoms, and policy of
this ancient empire to indulge
the hopeef ever being again fa
vorably received. Thofe who
have once treated them with per
fidy and infult, they can never
forget nor ever forgive.
