We knew a maiden fair and love- < ly; golden tresaes clustered on her ! j brow; the stains upon her cheeks j rivaled the first blush of morning in their delicate softness; her merry laugh was like the peal of wedding bells, her voice was as sweet as j notes struck from the lute-strings., As the summers glided by, her heart i seemed to grow more joyous, her i beauty became more riefi and mng jnificenL We experienced delight as we saw time giving increased el egance to tiic form, and imprinting j majesty upon the brow. But while! iwe rejoiced at the radiance of her 1 j beauty, others envied. The scandal ■■ [ monger found a fleck—a mere mote j : upon the otherwise spotless, purity.! : That “trifle, light as air,”, was quick- j | ly on the-tongues of many, amdscon j became confirmation strong as proof; of holy writ. Whispers floated on the air until they reached the ear of the slandered one. Then the roses laded fypm her cheeks, her., once merry laugh became a hollow mourn, aid when death came, as come it soon did, it was welcomed as a kind deliver. How many gentle ones have thus been done to death by slanderoqs Lfougues, the records Q.f Eternity j alone can tell.
