PAVEMENT STROKES.
Morgan is at last stirred up.
The Independents are getting “sore.”
Miss Annie Butler is visiting Atlan
ta.
Let every body stop their “teams”
and vote tor J. A. Billups.
We will roll up a telling majority lor
the nominee, next Tuesday,
We aie sorry to hear of the illness of
our friend, Mr. Win. Peacock.
Miss Rosa Stovall has been quite
sick train an attack of Scarlett fever.
Costello is everyday, extending his
already wide reputation as a low seller.
Mr. “Nick” Overby passed through
ourcity tins week en route for Mississip
pi.
Let the sly reynard keep near his den.
These are dam(p) bad mornings for him
to be out.
See here! The “scarlet genius” of the
Watchman, is hereafter to be known as
Soupy Clayton.
Mu. W. D. Wynn will offer extra in
ducements to cash buyers, on Saturdays.
Give him a trial.
Those of our merchants who advertise,
are doing a fine business. U will pay
you to patronize them.
We are glad to learn of the recovery of
Mrs. L. W. Pou who has been seriously
ill lor several weeks.
Tranks to Mrs. Dr. Andrews for a
relish in home made tomatto sauce. It
suited us exactly.
Mr. Geo. Turnkll has presented us
with a specimen of the finest apple vin
egar that we have seen.
Mr. Tibbolds, one of our most enter
prising farmers, will please accept
thanks for a nice lot of potatoes.
Florence Young, (col) was buried by
tho Good Templars last Thursday. We
hear that she was a good woman.
We lenrn that certain persons will be
in Madison to see that the election is
conducted fairly. Our advise is “hands
off”
IJkv. Seals has delivered several very
interesting lectures at the Methodist
church ou Temperance. Hope they did
good.
Bishop Beckwith will be here on the
second Sunday in this month and will
hold services at the Episcopal church at
the usual hours.
Next Tuesday will be electio* day.
Let all of our people keep cool and work
deliberately and assiduously to secure the
election of our townsman.
Wr regret to learn that Mr. Toler, an
industrious mechanic, lost his bright
little girl Ollie, from an attack ot dyp-
Iheria, last Wednesday night.
We have been requested to ask the
business men of Madison to close their
doors next Tuesday, and give one day
to the interest of the country.
One of wur farmers said the other day,
iPlie had made one bail of cotton more
on this year’s crop, he would have sold
his entile crop at 15 cents. Still they
complain of low prices.
Information leading to the wherea
bouts of one reception and two arm
chairs, removed from the Baptist church
during the time of repairs, will be thank
fully received. S. A. Burney.
When the Independent organs assert
that Col. Billups inaugurated a personal
warfare against Speer, they arc guilty of
unpardonable falsehood. Let them re
member that Col. Billups is an honora
ble gentleman.
Another one of our attractive maid
ens has been saernficed on hymen’s al
tar. This time, Dr. Richardson of Cass
county, marries Miss Jones, of ourcity.
—May their future be embalmed witli
sweet incense of marital harmony.
Miss Jessie Nebiiut and “Monk” will
please accept thanks for] assisting our
Literary Editress hi making up mail dur
ing our absence, last week. Their work
was well done, and it would give us pleas
ure to furnish them with regular employ
ment.
Wonder if men, whosare so busily
engaged in writing letters concerning
Mr Billups’ financial record, arc as eag
er to liquidate th*ir own debts, honestly
contracted? We don’t know the condi
tion of these gentlemen, but only ask for
information.
Wf. are proud to state that our Baptist
friends have their church now in com
plete order, and their ever interesting
services will be hold each Sabbath regu
larly berealter. We hope their magnifi
cent building will never again be injur
ed.
We call special attention to the card
of Harris A Burr. It is deservedly one
of the best business houses in the city.
This is natural, as no man who ever
dealt with these gentlemen, fails to go
there again. They hare a tine stock ot
new goods and soil them at bottom
prices.
Ulmer’s Liver Corrector, judging

Col. Mitchell at Lawrencevillc said:
“Smithy Clayton was hired from the
soup house of Atlanta, to do the dirty
work of the Watchman at S3O, per
month, on a credit. Had he been pres

would have underbidden him, on a cred

Wk learn from Mis. Sanders that we
are to expect Friday night one of the
most pleasurable dime parties ot tkeilay,
We didn’t hear the full programme but
heard her resolve that nothing should

be happy and bring a dime and do good,
as “he lives in fame who dies in virtue’s

a rousing speech to a rousing audience
who will roll up a rousing majority for
him at this precinct, on the sth of No

and judging from their looks, wo would
say that they were a determined set of
men. The day passed off'quietly, and
we think pleasantly to all, except per
