MADISON, GEOKGIA:
Saturday, November !>, 1878.
taking a census.
Never pave yon a history of my
oensus-takiog I believe. Well, I
look Jim Walker’s place while he
was up at Chicago, and I had
tome tough customers, I tell yon.
I came aloug one day to a cabin
some four or five miles from anv
neighbors ; in answer to my knock
am old woman ultout forty came to
the door.
*How d’ye do? Walk in; folk
aU gone ; take a ulieer ; were you
wantin’ to see my old man ?’
‘No, mudaui,’ said I, after ac
cepting her invitation, ‘I am tak
ing the census.’
T’he who ?’ said she.
*The census of the people,
the— ’
‘O, lor’; well, you won’t find
mch sense in the people about
here, the fever’u ager’s shook it
all out on ’em.’
I proceeded to explain.
‘Dear snz, I thought you might
be a magnetism man or a frenolo
gr-'
I proceeded to get her hus
band’s name and age, also the
children ; but when I asked her
age, she came down on mo fiat; I
smoothed it over, however, and let
go. liming, I said :
‘ls there any one else in your
family ?’
‘There's ar.nt Sallv, but yon
don't want her name, do you !’
Certainly, ma’am,’ I replied,
and proceeded to take it at once.
‘Then there’s old Jerry, but he’s
eenamost gin out, this fall. I j
dou’t think the poor feller’ll last
to another spring.’
‘Jerry—what is his other
name ?'
‘O, he liuiut got no other namo;
we never call him nothing else.’
‘How old is he ?’
‘Why, let me see ; fifteen, twon- !
ty, twenty-six -he must be hard I
on to thirty!’
‘An old man at thirty?’
‘Old man ! Who's talking about j
old man ? I’s telling you about'
old boss.’
Perhaps I didn’t pick up my liat
—perhaps I didn't take a very
hasty leave —well, perhaps not.
Utah and Mormonibm.—A min
ister from Halt Lake City, speak
ing of the agricultural advantages
of Utah, stated tbat the average
yield of wheat in that territory
was 40 bushels per acre, aud 85
bushels had been obtained. The
■oil and climate are also admira
bly adapted to fruit of all kinds,
and the mineral resources are al
most unparalleled in the country.
Speaking of the wealth of the
Mormon church, he said that the
tithes paid in for the year 1877
•mounted to $145,000. The Mor
mons are now building a temple
which will be, perhaps, the finest
and most expensive building in |
the Union, instead of dying out,;
the number of deluded adherents ;
to this pernicious system of super
stitiou seems to be increasing.
Missionaries are constantly at
work in this and foreign coun
tries, bringing in new recruits by
■cores and hundreds.
The Norristown llearald wants
to send the nine-wived man to jail
for 250 years because no fai -mind
ed gentleman would try to make a
corner in wives until Dr. Mary
Walker and Mr. Tilden had each
secured one.
A lecturer, addressing a mechan
ics’ institute, contended that: ‘Art
could not improve nature,’ when
one of the audiunoe set the whole
assembly in a roar by exclaiming:
‘How would you look without your
wig ?> '
Editors like brevity, but a man
who was recently linng in Indiana
suited them too well. He made
no remarks about heaven, but
nodded to the preacher and said
‘l’ll see you later,’ aud then the
trap fell.
