A Negro Wedding.
Tho bride and groom, anmvmiig
to tho names of Andrew and Susy,
were field bunds of unimpeachable
Guinea blood, and both h and passed
tho first half century of life. Their
dress, however, showed that they hud
not entirely eschewed tho follies of
their youth for, though rude and
cheap, as became their condition, it
was nevertheless embellished with
those bits of gewgaws and glaring
finery of bright colored ribbons and
tics in which the negro delights.
With the most decorous gravity
the preacher began:
“Andrew, does you lub dis yer wo
man.”
“I duz so,” was tlm reply.
“Will you promise to stick close
froo time and ’tarnity, renouncing all
odors an’ cleabing to her for ober an’
ebor, an' amen
"I will dat.”
“Will you lull, honor and ’boy
“Hold on dar, Ole Jack!” interrupt
ed tho groom, with no little show of
indignation; “’taint no use talking to
dis nigger ’bout ’heyiri do winimen
folks, onny ’cept ole miss!”
“Silence dar, you owduinptious nig
ger!” roared the wrathful preacher:
“what fur you go fur spilin de grabi
ty ob de ’elision. Dis yi r's only mut
ter ob form, an’ iimpoiisiblc to de ’ea
siou. Now don't you go fur to open
your black mouf until do time for you
to speak. Will you promise to lub,
honor an’ ’bey (Andrew still shaking
his head ominously at the obnoxious
word) dis yer nigger Susy, furnishin’
her wid nil things needed for comfort
an’ happiness an’ protectin' from suf
ferin’ an' milkin' smoove de path of
all her precedin’ days to come ?”
“I suppose I mils’ say yes to dat,”
said Andrew, meekly.
“Den I pronoun*-" dese yer two
couples to beman uu’ wife, an’ whom
de Lord has joined togedder, let no
man go fur to put deni asunder.”
Here an uproar arose among the
blacks, betokening a dilemma entire
ly unforeseen by Old Jack. For, in
asmuch as he had forgotten to require
the usual vows of Susy, they insisted
that however firmly Andrew might be
bound by the bonds of matrimony.
Susy was still single, and the pair
were but half married. The matter
was at last adjusted by the preacher
commencing the ceremony over again,
by which means tho couple were
firmly united to the satisfaction of all.

A nip, lit or two since, wltile on liis

The officer shook the follow until he
awoke him from his drunken slumber,
then he explained to him that In
would be obliged (o escort him to the

being a hard-hearted man, the officer
told the fellow that lie might finish his
snooze, providing he would get up
before the jieople were astir on the
streets. Passing that way again in
the course of an lionr or two, Air.
Shirts found that his snoozer had
roolled off the bench and was lying
in the empty case of a coffin, which
was sitting at the edge of the side
walk. Housing the man again, the
officer told him he “must get out of
there.”
“Gut of what?” grumbled the fel
low.
“Out of that coffin,” said Shirts—
though it was hut one of those largo
coffin-shaped cases in which coffins
are shipped.
“Who’s in a coffin ?” said the fel
low, rubbing his eyes.
“Why, you are,” said Shirts.
“If I am 1 don’t know it.”
’’Well, I know it, and if you don’t
get out of that it will he the end of
you. Don’t, you know that if the un
dertakers get up in tlie morning and
find you snoozing in here they’ll clap
a lid on the coffin, nail you up and
bury you, and then send in a bill and
make the county pay your funeral ex

Crawling out of his narrow quar

the coffin case for a time, then said:
“AI hat sort of and and undertakers
have you got up here in this country,
that go and set coffins ’longsido the

waiting for an answer he shuffled
away to find saft 1 quarters.
