The Way the tJeorclans “Tcmtlzc"
Ncjrroes Into Voting the Democratic
Ticket.
[From tlits St. Lomu Rcpnlilicun. ]
So much in being said riow-ii-dayn
about iut.iiuidation nnd heroism of
negro voters at the South that the
following illustration of the way it is
done will become of interest, as show
ing how negroes were intimidated into
voting the Democratic ticket (luring
the recent election in (ieorgin. A
correspondent of the •an re
cently travelling in the South saw at
Chattanooga a number of negroes,
who, in charge of a white boss, wen
on their way to work on the Cincin
nati Southern Hoad. 1 hey had
had been doing railroad work in
< teorgia.
Entering into conversation with the
white boss of the gang the corres
pondent asked if the report tlyit the
(roorgia negroes largely voted the
Denierratic ticket, was true.
“Oh yes,” was the reply, “n great
many of them did. All the gang you
see here with me voted the Democrat
ic tide t at Home.
“Ho .v did yon induce them to do so;
by threats or by persuasion V"
The man laughed. “There is old
Click Nelson,” said lie, pointing to a
Cong ' patriarch who sat on a pile of
lumber with a cane in his hand and a
venerable looking carpet hag at his
feet. “There is old lhide Nelson; he
carries water for tile gang week days
and preaches to them Sunday s. Ask
him, lie will fell you.
The correspondent approached the
venerable African with “I’ncle, they
tell me you are a Democratic darkey
and that you preach Democracy to
your congregation. How is it ?
“Well, boss, 1 guess yon'se beam
about right, i votes de Democratic
ticket when I. down in Jorjy.'
“But 1 thought, lTide, that all the
negroes voted the itepublieui ticket
always unless they were scared away
from’ the polls, or scared into voting
the Democratic ticket ?”
“Lor bless you, chile, I sc neither
scart no way. I done vote de way de
boss axed rue to, ail’ so did all de bal
ance, cos .1 * boss tote tar wid us, an
do de right t'iug.”
“Tell me about it.”
“Well, yon see, one day de boss he
s. tv, ‘Boys, Iso done been to Home
and had you all registered to vote.’
Den he say, “Boys, come up to my
shanty, I'se got some oh de true Dem
ocrat doctrine up dur.’ So we all
toiler de boss up to his shanty. Den
he bring out a big demijohn an' a cup
an' hail' rotin’ de whisicy. Poweriu.
good whisky dat. ‘Boys,’ lie sa.v,
‘dat whisky come all the way iroui
Kentucky. Democrats made it in a
Democratic still, out of Democratic
t an, an’ lsc just poured it out of a
Democratic demijohn into a Deiuo
11aide cup for you ail to drink.’ Den
we au luff. ‘Hoys,’ do boss say,
‘Bimeoy de ’lection come. Deu I gin
you all holiday. Your pay go on us
same as if you to work all day. c
all go down to Home an hah a good
time. 1 pays all de bills. You have
all de good Democrat liquor you
want.’
“Well, den, in two or free weeks de
boss come agiu one nignt an’ says:
‘.Bovs, come up to my snanty; more
ob dat true Democratic doctrine up
dar.’ So we all go. Deu he tiring
out dat same Democratic demijoun
and pour out dat same Democratic
liquor into dat same Democratic clip.
I tell you it mighty good. Den ue
boss he say: ‘Hoys, we all go down
to Home au' hub a good time to-mor
row. Heaps o’ fun. 1 pays all de
bills. Ail de whisky in Home jis like
dis -Democratic. You vote de Dem
ocratic ticket an’ dat whisky make
you all fat. But it pi/.en ehery man
dat votes de Radical ticket right
away.’ Den we uli laff. \\ e know de
boss jokin’ bout dat pizeniu’, but we
make up our min’ to vote de Demo
cratic ticket cos de boss tote Ja r wid
ns an’ we want to please him. So we
ail go down to Home an' inarch right
up o de polls like a company ot sol
diers, vie liosS at tile head, all vote de
st.-uig!it Democratic in-xor. De boss
he keep ius wold, pay all de bills au’
de boys iiubu gran good time.”
“But, uncle, didn't you see any
Radicals there, and ilidu t they try to
persuade vou to vote tne Radical tick
et ?”
“Oh, vis, dar some Radicals dar.
But dey didn’t sav unyting. De lacu
am, de Ji.tdieais don t say much m
Jorjy. Dey used i>> her party lively
down dar, Ulit (lev's got Ured an' son
o’ restin’ now.
“Would you have voted the Radi
cal ticket if they had asked you tor”
“No, I reckon not.”
“Suppose they nud asked you, and
you had voted tile Kad.e.u ticket,
would the boss have made any trouble
for you ?”
“No, de boss he not make any trou
ble for us. iiowsomeeboer, f speck
lie might pester tie Radicals if dey in
terfere will its. i beam him tell a
Radical dar, dis as we was waitin’ to
git a chance to vote, dat it 'wouldn't
pay b. ..i more dan one cent on de
dollar to fool wid deni darkies.’ ”
“ W'uat ihd ttie boss mean by that ?”
“I spose he mean want he say.
Anyhow, dat Radical lie seem to un
derntan’ what lie mean pulfectly.”
“Who was the Radical, did you
know him?”
Yes, I know him. He word ess sort
’o felier. Come dar bout seven
years ago from Hie Norf. lie hold
good many offices while dat man
Bullock govner. Bin out of oilis
though a good while now. He tritiin
sort ’o chap, play cards inos' de time
“Do you suppose your boss would
have hurt him it' lie had uii.jrferred
with yon or tried to persuade you to j
vote the Radical ticket?"
•No, L reckon not. De hose he very
quiet man. Do.it say much. But 1
speck he might hurt somebody if dey
poster him too much. Dar was no
danger, dough. Dat Radical he uu
derstan’ wliat de boss mean and he
keep away from de boys. Dili's all.’’
“Is flic boss a Southern man ?”
“Lor’ bless you. no. He coTTiedowi
liyar wid Sherman’s army. Den lie
! wounded at Ketinesaw an’ sent hack
to dis place ((Tmttannoga ) ini' when
he git well ho go to work on de rail*
i roads,”
“Do you know what State he is
' from ?"
“No, I don't dat for shurli, but I
speck, cf 1 ain't mistaken, lie conn
from Ohio.”
At this juncture “the boss” came
■up ami told his men that the train
. they were going North on was back
, nig down and they must get ready to
get mi hoard.
“Did you find out wliat you want
ed ?” he asked laughing.
The correspondent replied that h<
had, and asked the man wliat State
In* was from.
He said from Cleveland. Ohio, and
; had been doing contract work on rail
roads in the Smith since lSiiti. Hi
spoke very bitterly of the ear] iet-bag-
gers; said they were paralyzing busi
ness or trying to, and denounced the
: convention in session at Chattanooga
in unmeasured terms.
The correspondent then related
wliat the old negro had said about
the white Radicals, and asked the
: man what lie would have done to him
if he had interfered with his negroes
who were going to vote.
“I would have belted him over the
head with the barrel of my revolver,”
he replied. “That fellow Cady,whom
Click* Nelson was s; caking of. is the
most miserable and contemptible s
in ten States. I knew him in Cleve
land before the war. He never was a
soldier, but followed t lie army as a
sharp and a gambler. 1 would not
permit- any siieli scum to have auy
! thing to say to my negroes. Give
him a chance to work on their minds
j a day or two, and half of them would
j quit me and stay loafing about Rome,
j doing nothing. That's why I object
to liis having anything to do with
them."
And this is tcrroism in Georgia.
Preserving Sweet Potatoes in
Cotton Seed.
[From the Southern Cultivator.]
Editor Southern Ci i.i ivator. Hav
ing seen several articles recently in
tile Cultivator as to the best mode of
putting up sweet potatees for keeping,
1 1 am rather surprised at not seeing
something about cotton seed for that
mtrpose, as they are kept in cotton
seed here, perfectly sound, from one
; crop to the following. The potatoes
should he dug as soon as possible af
ter frost; and, if this cannot he done
lat once, the vines must be cut oft'
dose to the ground immediately.
When the vines have been frosted,
fermentation sets in very quickly,
and the products of tills fermentation
Tire conveyed to the potatoes, render
ing it difficult or impossible to keep
them sound under any plan. Our
mode of putting them up—audit
lias proved very succe sful is as fol
lows :
On the floor of an airy house - or,
even an open shed will answer
spread cotton seed to the depth of
six inches, upon which pile the pota
toes, where they are to rein tin sever
al days with little c'r no covering, if
the weather is not too cold, until they
have gone through what, is termed Un
sweating process; then cover with
seed two to four inches thick. Per
haps, in your latitude, it might he
necessary to make the covering of
seed somewhat thicker; though, here,
:in latitude thirty-one, two to four
inches is ample, except in an unusu
ally cold snap, when more seed may
be put on, and raked off when the
, weather moderates. This is a cheap
and effectual way of keeping them.
I send this item, with the hope of
its benefitting some of your readers,
as a small return l'*.r the valuable and
varied information I derive from the
] Cultivator.
Will it do to sow Red Rust Proof
oats in the fall, or are they essential

Does this oat maintain the high

In our experience the Rust Proof

is pure, it maintains its early reputa
tion. AVe have heard of some rusting J
I where the seed was impure -as a
gro t deal of it is. It will not grow ;
ligh enough to cut on poor land, if
the spring is dry. In all other re-;
spects, it is a most admirable oat,

assassinations and the massacres may
lie reported in progress, and, in or
der that nothining of the sort might
escape me, 1 have haunted the news
paper offices by day and by night, and
vigorously questioned and cross-ques
