QUITMAN :
T. A. HALL • • Assistant Local Editor.
THURSDAY OCTOBER, 28, 1875.
REPORTER!***.
—Quitman will be well represented at
the Tbomasville Fair to-day.
—The Town Council meets next Mon
day night.
—Quitman and Brooks county is bet
ter represented at the Thomaaville Fair
this week than over before.
—Dr. Snow has a coop of fine game
chickens on exhibition at the Tbmnss
ville Fair.
—The fight between Dodd'a dog and
tbo Florida bear will take place on Sat
urday, inside the Fair grounds at Thom
asville.
—Bart Thrasher left with a drove of
horses and mules for the Thomaaville
Fair on Tuesday morning.
—The Brooks County Manufacturing
Company have samples of their yarns,
cloths, etc., on exhibition at the Tbom
asville Fair.
Prof. Harwell has received anew
tent, and erected it on the Opart House
square. He takes all kiuds of pictures,
and does excellent work.
—The wife and little daughter of Mr.
J. T. Thrasher, our worthy Sheriff and
town Marshal, are both dangerously ill
with typhoid fever.
An important notice is published by
Judge Harden in another column, by
which it will be seeu that parties hold
ing printed county orders cun pay their
taxes with them.
Our esteemed fellow-townsman, Mr.
O. T. Terry, is home again, after a so
journ of two or three months in New
York. He presents the appearance of s
niaD who has been good to himself, and
is as jolly and happy as ever.
—That jubilee the darkies had over at
‘‘Hays' Hall” last Saturday night was
the occasion of contributing some twen
ty-five or thirty dollars iu fines to the
town treasury on Monday morning.
—See the advertisement of Mr. Cyrus
McNeill in another column, under the
heading of “a word to the wise.” It
speaks for itself, and our readers can rely
upon Mr. McNeill as boiug an honorable,
fair-dealing geutleman.
—We were rejoiced to see the venera
ble Rev. J os. S. Baker in town one day
this week. This was the first time we
had seen him on our streets since he re
covered from his last illness, though we
lenrnjthat ho attended church last Sun
day, and offered a fervent and eloquent
prayer on the occasion of the ordination
of Mr. White. *
—"That boy of ours is a perfect little
mule,” said the head of the family to his
wife the oiw- nUtlit after he hail rocked
the little tvVd-yeht-oldcr io. v-.lf aIJ hour
in a vain endeavor to put him to sleep;
and ho never thought ouce that, to be a
mule, that boy must, of necessity, have
an ass for a father.
—Our young friend Aurelius H. Me-
Cardel is now ...receiving a handsome
stock of provisions and family groceries,
which lie is opening in the store former
ly occupied by E. T. Dukes & Bro., ou
Screven Street. His advertisement will
appear in our columns ns soon as he gets
stiaightened out.
Stoves and Tinware. —The attention
of our renders is invited to the advertise
ment of Mr. T. J. Streety, to be found
in another column. He Ims (fone into
new quarters in the brick building form
erly occupied. By E T nukes & Bro..
and has just received a large ai.d varied
assortment of stoves, which he is offer
ing at reduced prices. Give him a call
and see for yourselves.
Insijbance.— By reference to our new
advertisements it will be seen that Capt.
8. T. Kinosbeby has accepted the agen
cy at Quitman for the Georgia Home In
surance Company. Capt. Kingsbery is
a gentleman thoroughly informed upon
the subject of insurance, and his knowl
edge of the stauding of the various com
panies now represented in the country
and his personal integrity are, to those
who know him, sufficient guarantees of
the reliability of any company he repre
aento.
Wt) are now receiving almost daily let
iters from the North iu answer to onr
mammoth Irade issue on the 7th iust. The
■writers all say they read the paper with
great interest, and that they were favor
ably impressed with our history of
jßrooks county and description of oar
•section of country. One man writes to.
inform us that he will bring five hundred
Euglish immigrants to our county, if we
will make up one hundred and fifty or
two hundred dollars and send to him.
We are thinking about it.
Superior C'onrt.
The regular November term of Brooks
Superior Court will commence next
ilonday, and probably continue for two
weeks. There are several cases of im
portance to be tried, but the one iu
which the public feels most interested is
that of Btn Jordan, charged with mnr
der in the second degree, he being the
man who struck the late Cnpt, J. H.
Hunter with a stick at the time when the
latter received the fatal stab from the
kuife of Nic Thompson. Nio Thompson,
who was convicted of murder and sen
tenced to be hung, but whose sentence
was staid by his case being carried to the
Supreme Court, will be re-seutenced by
Judge Hansell-at this term of the Court.
We aro advised that Prof. Harwell designs
remaining in Quitman, a short time; as an
engagement at Lake City, Fla., will prevent
him from doing so, all who have not
availed themselves of his skill as an artist
had best lose no tim* lu doing o,
The Rood Work Still does Oil.
It has keen several times intimated
that the columns of the Repokt&r are
presided over by a "hard case,” and that
this offloo is a "had place;" therefore the
thoughtless and unobserving person
might think that the associations and
surroundings of one iu any way connect
ed with the paper would have a tendency
to corrupt his good morals nud lead him
astray iuto the paths of wickedness nud
sin; hut wo ore now prepared nud shall
proceed to show that our entire staff,
from the editor to the devil, lias been
grossly slandered, and tlint, instend of
corrupting those associated with us,
there has never been a time, Biuca the
Ripostes came iuto existence, that it
has not had a man gradually growing and
ripeuing for the ministry.
A little more than eighteen months
ago the Report hr was established with
Col. W. B. Beuuet as senior editor and
Mr. T. A. White as one of the proprie
tors. Shortly afterwards our senior was
ordained a Minister of the Gospel, and
retired from journalism.
Next Mr. White was liscensed by his
chinch to preach. He sold out his in
terest iu the Reporter about two mouths
ago, aud on last Sunday was regularly or
dained as a Minister—our ex-senior
preaching the ordinution sermon.
And this is not all. A few months ago
'Mr. E. M. Blake came into the Rkpor
ter office to work. He being confined
iu the office as foreman compositor all
the time, it was not long before he
caught tlio disease; and now ho works
only one day in the week—the remain
der of his time being given to studying
for the ministry. He preached his mai
den sermon more tbau two months ago,
and has since preached twice iu Quitman.
At this writing we are not prepa; e 1
to say whose time it will be next, but
“the boys" say the good work must go
on, and wo suppose they will some dny
"jep” for the honor like they do for the
choice of copy.
Now the next time that auburn-haired
tempernnco lecturer and tract distributor
comes around to tell us of the vast
amount of good that we might do by
having a temperance and religious de
partment iu this paper, we shall trium
phantly point at our trio of Missionaries,
and ask him how many he ever turned
out. "As the twig is bent so will the
tree incliue. ”

neater appearance. They are far supe
