The attorneys of Nio Thompson went
before his Honor, A. 11. Hausell, at
I’homasville lust Tuesday with affidavits
from E. 0. Wade, Sr., and Joseph
Knight, upon which affidavits a motion
tv as made on “extraordinary (pounds”
for anew trial. Capt. 11. G. Turner ap
peared as counsel for the State, and, with
but little or no trouble, had the case dis
missed before the affidavits were read,
Upon the grounds that, under a recent
decision of the Supreme Court, a motion
for anew trial we. out of order, during
vacation, or at any time except when the
Court was in regular session. Ilia lien

to entertain the motion of counsel for
the prisoner, who has now but two alter

An Old Il'ur Thief in L'mko.
Henry Shearman, that incorrigible
old thief, was again brought up la-fore
his Honor Judge Harden, lad Monday,
for hog stealing. Air. Mitch Young, the
owner of the hog, took toe stand. IE ■
stated that Shearman hadconfe ed eoio

said that while passing the gin house lie
saw a fat shout asleep. The temptation
was more than the old rogue could stand,
so he raised his axe and killed him. The
Judge asked Mr. Young what was the!
weight of the lem. Mr. Y. replied:
“About sev.nty-fivo pounds.” Il:s

Welcome to Ceergi i.
We are pleased to chronicle the arrival
of Capt. N. Cobb and hi s most estimable
lady amongst os. The Captain lets pur
chased a residence iu our quiet town,
and we trust he may never feel, in the
exchange from tie- inhospit ile iiomle
of Wisconsin to our “s’ ny land,”
that our hearts are colder than Ids
f r.iier Northern home. A g i.“ nail of
protracted experience as a
vessel, whom flag lias wav I i™me.ny
ports on either side of the Atlantic, hav
ing enjoyed the peculiarities of every
clime beneath the son, and possessed of
a competency, we esteem it no small!
compliment to our section Unit he should
have chosen this place in which to pass
liis remaining years.
AYc also learn that Hr. R. T. Robinson I
and lady have taken rooms with a family
in town, and propose to occupy them ;
soon. They will remain for the winter,
and may possibly be induced to cast their
lot with us.
To all such we freely extend the cordial
hand of friendship, with the assurance
that we of Brooks county will spare no
effort to make them feci that “their lives
have been cast in pleasant places,” and
tkat the sunshine of our skies warms our
souls as well as beautifies our landscape.
Shall there lie a Nomination !
Daring the past two or three weeks we
have been called upon by prominent citi
zens of the town to know if we advocated
the holding of a convention for the pur
pose of nominating a Mayor and Aider
men for the approaching municipal elec
tion on the first Monday in January
next.
So far ns we are concerned wo care not
whether a nouiinatiugeonvention is held
or not. Last year we advocated and
caused a convention to be held, but the
manner in which it was done resulted
imply iu a primary election; and it was
(l farce til licit.
If the citizens of Quitman desire to as
semble for the purpose of nominating a
peoples tid'd w have no obj attimi, but ,
we desire it distinctly understood that
the Ilni'oiiTKn will fight anything like
such a slum as was held last year.
If the citizens of the town cannot come
together and, with harmony, nominate
such persons ns they think will adminis
ter the affairs of the town to tlic .satis
faction of all, we think it much better to
let each party, ring or faction go its own
Way --relying upon the votes of the peo
ple for the resnlis ivspeetiv.lv anticipat
ed.
There is no doubt but there is great
room for improvement iu the manage
ment of the affairs of the town, but as to
whether such improvement shall be
made, or whether our people desire a
change remains for them t decide.
It has been suggested by prominent
citizens that we call a mass meeting for
the purpose of nominating a people’s
ticket to go before the voters of the town
at the approaching election, but, under
the circumstances, we feel a delicacy in
doing so.
If our people desire to hold nominat
ing conventions let them organize and
appoint executive committees represent
ing the respective parties, w ho shall have
power to call the masses together. The
Rspoiirim never shirks its duty, but, un
der the present circumstances, it does
not feel that it is authorized to call a
nominating convention. Let the people

—Still tho times nro hard.
—Business only tolerable,
—Tho weather seems to be still unset
tled.
—Cotton comes in rather slowly, and
there is still a great deal of it in tho coun
try.
—Mr. A. J. Sparks and family will
leave in a few days for Sandersville, Ga.,
which place he intends making his
homo. *
—There has been a general rush on
salt dealers by the planters this week.
; From this wo suppose that porkers stand
| in danger of their lives.
—Mr. Terrell Fielder had his arm bro
! ken ono day last week, by the falling of
a scaffold v hero ho was at work, on the
place of Col. P. Sheffield.
—Mr. It. C. Mclntosh left this place
lust Tuesday night for Savannah, where
ho intends laying in a stock of confec
tionaries, sweet meats, etc., for Christ
j mas. *
—Our energetic Dutchman Barber has
j bought the house which he now occu
pies. Finisher is a good, honest, deserv
ing, go-o-liead fellow, and is entitled to
I lie liberal patronage of our citizens *
, JJur young friend, Lncious Wood,
bought a buggy and harness for four
! doil. rs at Sheriff sale last Tuesday. It is
certainly worth that amount, as it will
serve to while away Sunday afternoons.
*
• —We neglected to mention last week
that Mr. Jerry AA'ilson, Jr., is tho chain- ‘
pion sweet potato -grower of the county. '
lie brought samples of his crop to our
office, and one of them weighed seven
| pounds and another five. They were of J
; the white Spanish variety.
—There are several now buildings notv j
in course of construction in town, three j
of which are dwelling houses, and each ;
of them are ornaments to our j
place. AVe are glad to see such improve
ments going on, and if they continue we
will have just cause to be proud of our
j city. * j
—Our ware house is filled to overflow- j
ing with cotton for the first time since it
was built, the price of cotton being so j
low, that our farmers prefer to store it |
rather than sell; and judging I
from the way some of them talk, we
tbinkjthat there will he less of the staple
planted next year than usual. *
—Air. R. D. Harris happened to quite ]
a serious accident last Saturday night.
He came into town from the country, :
where he had been at work, and went to ,
put up and feed his mule. Tho animal i
is out; of a very contrary disposition, and :
when Mr. Harris pulled the bridle oil
the mule whirled around and threw j
him against the wall, breaking his arm !
just above the wrist.
—The question of having a concrete
pavement, in the business part of town j
was agitated on ilia street yesterday. AN e !
think it will add a great deal to the ap- i
pearanee of our streets and certainly j
prove a c-ijdoil to tie iadi.;-- .who give j
to wade ankle deep iu mud and water
whenever they go out slioping during
such weather as we have had for the past
month. AYc heard several real estate ow ti
ers on Screven Street say they were will
ing to be taxed their pro rata amount to
have such a pavement made jbofore their
doors. AVe think the Town Council ought
to devise some means by which wo can
improve our side walks.
—On Tuesday evening a young “cul-:
lud” lady, hailing from the “Land of
Flowers,” called at Air. Tillman s store
and wilted for ladies’ hats. Air. AA ado, I
with his usual politeness, placed a lot on 1
the counter for her inspection; and while
she vas admiring them the watchful
clerk detected her striping one of them :
of it’s beads and other trimming. Mr.
AV. at once informed her that she would
either have to pay for it or go to jail., and
the time it took her to look up “daddy
and mammy” was astonishing. AA lien
the old woman was found and informed .
of the young ladie’s conduct she preaeb-'
ed Quitman’s funeral, but Air. AAade
coolly told the old lady that it inude no
difference to him whether she paid for
the hat or not; and without further words
the old lady pulled out. the requisite sum
from her pocket and handed it to AN .
with the following words: “Yes, you 1
stinking heifer, here goes your year’s ’
work for miffin’.” She was isoou hoard 1
to say, “Steve, hitch upand let’sjlenve dis
here place in Georgy, m* dey will gitntter
ns about somet.ing else.” *
—Last Saturday night a party of young
gentlemen went ’possum limiting. They :
caught three opossums, all of which
were “treed” in gopher hole§. Af'.er the.
dogs had scratched out the third
possum a noise was heard to come from
the depths of the hole w hich very plain
ly b-I rayed the whereat) uts of a raltle- I
snake. Accordingly, two large fish hooks, j
which one of the parly chanced to have
about his person, were attached to the
end of a pole which was scut down to
hook and drag out the reptile. His
snakesliip kept up a continual ratling and j
was caught, by the hooks several times
before he was brought up to where he
could bo seen. Finally, however, one of
the hooks took effect about a foot from
his head, and he was drawn to the sur
face. A light was thrown down into the
hole so that the party Could see, and as
soon ns his snakesliip was visible a volley
of pistol shots were opened on him. As
soon as it was considered safe to draw
him out the manipulator of the pole and
hooks brought him to the surface, when
it was found that they had captured the
largest snake of the season. As soon as
the reptile reached the earth’s surface a
fresh volley was opened on him and lie
was instantly killed. He measured
about five feet in length, and weighed
at least twenty-five pounds. He had ev
idently gone into winter quarters, but
was aroused and aggravated to betray his
whereabouts by the unwelcome visit of
the dogs and oppossura hunters. II"
had twelve rattles.
Tiie Railroad House.
By reference to our new advertise
ments it will be seen that tho “Railroad
House,” near tho Atlanticnnd Gulf Rail
road depot in Quitman, has been taken
in charge and re-opened by our esteem
ed fellow-townsman and the efficict rail
road agent, Dr. ,T. T. Davis, for the ac
commodation of tho traveling public. This
is the Doctor’s first experience in the
j hotel business, but ho has those with
him who understand how to run the
"hash department,” and, knowing him
as well as we do, we have no hesitancy iu
assuring our friends mid tho traveling
public generally that they will find him
to he a hospitable and accommodating
host, lie is a clever and upright gen
tleman, and we take pleasure in com
mending him and his house to tho pub
lic.
Our' Tun n Council.
Great complaint has been made of late
regarding the indifference of our present
Mayor and Aldermen concerning their
duty and their negligence of such affairs
as ought properly to como before them
! at least once every month —their regular
j times for meeting. Our Mayor has been
j absent from the town for two months or
‘more, and the Council, na,n body, has
I been completely ud;,. and. ,T e Ala;,
! or’s courts have been mere mockeries,
| and everything and everybody liaveTlone
independently as they pleased, the May
or and Town Council to the contrary
notwithstanding. Tho property holders
of the town have been taxed just double
j what their taxes were last year, and still
i there is not a single public improvement
i in the town to show for it.
“Why it this thus, and why have our
i Mayor and Board of Aldermen allowed !
|ittobe so ?" we are frequently asked. 1
j “Why don’t you go fur’em ?” asks an
other. Now, that is just exactly the un
pleasant position we, as a public journal
ist, occupy: if an individual happens to
go astray, or a public officer abuses his
office it is expected that wo must “go for j
him.” So be it.
-
Well, we know our present Mayor and !
Board of Alderim n to l e honorable and
intelligent gentlemen. AVe like them all,
personally, but, at tho same time, we
know they have been negligent of their
duty. They have not come together as
they should have done and counseled as
a body concerning the welfare of the |
town. You know you have not done it,
gentlemen. Yon have not held a meet
ing with your presiding officer and a full
quorum of your body present in the last
three months. How, then, can you act
together and administer pi" perly tho af
fairs of the town ? Last Monday nigifl
—your regular time for meeting—you let
your monthly counsel go nuhcld oil :
account of a show w hich was held in
town that night. The next, night--the
time when your Treasurer’s report should I
have been heard and the tax returns for (
the year should have 1 "li 'made—but [
throe of von a io presold, and no nieet
h o w-us hcl liK'NV'o no n *-tsad, I.
that notwithstanding the absence ,-,f the
Alayor, a meeting has been appointed for [
next Tuesday night, after which time we '
hope to be able to give our readers an ;
idea of how our municipal affairs stand, j
(Uciini.’nrs from Cherry Lake.
The Thursday night before Christmas '
is the time set apart by our neighbors
fur the Christmas Tree. This night was
! selected ill order that those who may
1 desire might attend the one to be held 1
ill Madison. The services of Rev. E. 8. j
Tyner have been engaged to deliver an ;
appropriate lecture for the occasion. A
happy time is anticipated by the lit tie
folks. “Christmas doesn’t come but
once a year,” and childhood doesn’t last
always, therefore, legnll come out anu
contribute to their happiness—cause
emotions of gladness to spring up in
their young hearts to bo cherished even
iu old age.
“Old Sol,” after paying ns a visit on
' Sunday afternoon an i Monday—having
bid his face from sight, for three long,
gloomy, miserable week: -has again re
tired into his inscrutable hiding place.
Two young gents called on their sv.v t
j hearts tho other evening. The night
grew so “miserably dark’ that they had
to resort to the assistance of a “pine bunt
! torch” to find their way homo.
Old George wjis com? n'tably snoozing
in a loft over a horse stable. Both ends
of his “ueek-rug” hung through a crack.
A mule nos. ing around for blades of fod
| dor happened to catch hold of it. The
j brackish taste pleased his palate, and he j
j began to chew and pull with great force j
I and vigor, pinning George to the floor ;
in such a manner that he was unable to j
| make known liis distress. His muh ship, i
1 after having exhausted the supply of salt j
1 in the rag, and at the same time coming j
near exhausting George’s supply of “the
breath of life,” released liis hold.
“Hunting ducks” is the sport of the ‘
season. AVe saw one fellow, the other
j day, hunting his highland duck.
The young folks had a “surprise party”
at Mr. A. J. I’offeo’s last night. Wo
have attended many gatherings, but we
have been to none where there was more
real enjoyment than was had on this oc
casion, especially among the little boys
and girls. It would have caused the. most
dejected heart to swell with exultation to
have witnessed their emotions while en
gaged in their amusements. It doubt
less brought to Hie minds of nil those
who are riper in years fond recollections
of childhood days.
I’rof. AleCarrou will give an entertain
ment iu the Academy to-night. The
subjects upon which he will lecture will
be illuminated upon canvass by means of
a stereopticon. His lecture and views
upon elementary astronomy will be in
teresting, and which should be witnessed
by every school boy and girl.
The exercises of the Academy will be
suspended on next Friday week lor
j Christmas holidays—will be resumed in
the early part of January, This neigh
, borhood would sustain an irreparable
loss if circumstances were such us to de
prive us of Mr. Brooks’ Services as
