The Hosult

Pr.oF. If. V. Forrester, who lins had
charge of the Quitman Academy for the
past two years, has been elected Presi
dent of Crawford College, at Dalton,
Ga., and has removed with his family to
that place, preparatory to entering upon
the duties of his position on the 17th
inst.. During his stay in our midst Mr.
Forrester has made many friens, both as a
teacher and citizen, who regret to see
him go; but his new ii. U of labor will lie
one probably more acceptable than the
one which he leaves, and we hope that
he may meet with friends and a richly
merited success.
Garden Seeds.
We are under obligations to Messrs.
McCall ,fc Groover for liberal samples of
Garden Seeds, a full stock of which they
have just received. The collection on
our tabic embraces every variety of seed
that can bo grown successfully in fid ,
climate, and they are warranted to he
pure and directly from the celebrated
Buist’s seed warehouse. Iv.iw is the
time to commence operations for plant
ing early vegetables, and if you will go j
to Messrs. McCall k Groover you can get
any kind of seed yon want, at prices to
suit the limes. Give them a call.
Stonewall Fire Company.
The regular monthly meeting of the
Stonewall Fire Company was held hist
Tuesday evening, it being the appointed
time for election of officers. The follow -
ing were elected for the present year:
Nathan Gazan, President.
T. S. Seaman, Foreman.
L. F. Haddock, Ass’t Foreman.
W. It. Wilson, Engineer.
*" J. V. l>roks, A Ist Pip. mam.
B. w. Bentley, 2nd Pipemuu.
A. 11. MeOardle,
Joseph Knight, Axe-men.
T. A. Hall, Secretary.
W. L. Wilkinson Financial Sec.
James 11. Wade, Treasurer.
Bad on the Meat.
The weather which we have Iveen hav
ing for the. past two weeks lias proven,
we fear from all that we. can lerrn, very
disastrous to tlic meat crop of this section.
There wore more hogs raised in this
county last year than ever before since
the war, and a majority of our farmers
killed as many of their porkers as possi
ble during the cold weather which wo
had about a week before Christmas.
We beard one farmer say yesterday that
he thought his meat was all right until
lie went to unpack it for hanging in his
smokehouse, when ho found his hams
snd shoulders all to be damaged. We
are fearful that this will bo the caso with
many. *
The Municipal Elect ion*
The election for Mavov an Aldermen,
which took place on last Monday, was the
occasion of the greatest excitement
among the citizens of the town, hoth
white and black, ever experienced with- '
in the history of Quitman. The cam-j
paign opened fully a month before the
day of election, and eaeli party done, all
in its power from the beginning to se
cure the influence and suffrage of voters, j
“irrespective of color or previous condi
tion of servitude;” and we are sorry to ;
say that means were resorted to in order j
to obtain the votes of the colored people
which “reflect rather dimly” upon some
of the leading candidates and their
friends ns democrats or anti-negro can- ;
eusers, scalawags, or whatever else it
may he called. Night meetings were
held with the negroes by those who have
been fierce and even vicious in then* de
nunciations of “Radicals and scalawags ’
for doing the same thing. “Consistency,
thou art really a rare jewel.”
But, the election is over, and wo sin
cerely hope and trust that our town may
never be thrown into such a conTusion
and fever of excitement over ft similar is
sue again. We will venture the asser
tion that within the last month there has
been enough “election whiskey” drank
in the town to drown half the negro vo
ters in the place if it could be consolidated
into one pool and they cast, into it.
This may seem like abroad assertion,
and we confess that, as a citizen of the
town, it is with no small degree of shame
that wo write it, hut we can prove its
correctness by actual figures, and can
dor compels us to assert it. We took no
part in the contest, either as a journalist
nor as an individual, and upon general
principles, or on those upon which the
election was conducted, we have no char
ges to prefer against one party more than
the other, but wo do say, God forbid that
our municipality may over bo cursed by
another such canvas and the corrupting
niaiieuvotings resorted to in this elec
tion.
