I noticed in last week's Ketorter a
piece written over the signature of
“Honest Democrat,” endeavoring to
make it appeal' Unit ace rtain class of
citizens had supported me for the po
sition of Alderman, and that they wen
guilty of a great wrong. Jii order to
make those gentlemen who did sup -
port me feel easy on the subject, I
take this occasion to state for the ben
efit of all concerned, that I was urged
to accept the same position on the
Newsome ticket,was frequently
asked to r&tCniK&lf'fk ct by Air. A.

of the letter written him (Newsome)
in my posession.

—A great many of our farmers
have lost all their meat iim conse
quence of the warm weather. It
seems to be a general complaint all
over the country; therefore we may
look for stringent times here during
the approaching spring and summer,
and should commence to economize
now'. *

—“Quite a change in the weather.”
—Cott.ni is still coming in.

—Sineo tho last cold spell the
Qnitraanites have been feasting on
pork, sausages, spare-ribs, etc. *
—Tho Stonewalls are having drills
and meetings frequently now, and
since the effectual service rendo.ted at
tho recent tire, they seem to take
more interest in their organization,
than ever before; and wo hope will
continue their efforts and make a livo
working company.
—Air. Henry Giles, who has for n
long time been with Air. A. J. Roun
tree, can now bafound at the grocery
house of Air. K. C. Alelutosh, where
he asks of all of bis friends to give
him a call, as he is fully prepared to
give them bottom prices for any goods
which they may want in tho grocery
line. * *
Messrs. Wilson A Sweat have our
best wishes for the liberal sample of
pure grape juice placed upon our
table by Air. Sweat a f- .v days since.
It has a peculiar grape ll ivor seldom
ever found in Scuppornong wine, and
those who are fond of a good article
need not take our word for it, but go
and sample it for themselves. *
Last Monday afternoon the
freight train going east, conductor
At. J. Brosius, happened to quite a
sviioti i accident, and wi detain i at
Quitman until after l.ight. The tire
of one of the driving wheels, by some
means, got broken, and the engine
was so disabled that it could not do
duty. Another engine was telegraph
ed for, and reached here about 7
o’clock in the evening.

i —The attention of our readers i
- to the advertisement of
' Messrs. B. AV. Lev, ret to 7: So n, to be
found elsewhere in to-day’s RuPccTtr,.
Mr. Levcrctte is well and favorably
known in this county, and has recent
ly added to bis business a ha.rncss

who is a practical harness maker, in
charge of this department. They

—Our new Town Council seem to ;
have gone to work with a determina
tion to do xoihc'Ju it f j, even if they have
to undo that which has already been
done. The old Council, just before !
the expiration of their term of office,
resolved to pave our streets, and had
the lumber hauled to commence the
■ work, but our new City Fathers saw
proper at their meeting last Monday
night to indefinitely postpone the un
dertaking, and agreed to appropriate
the lumber for the building and rc
j pairing of bridges. A majority of the
bridges in tlu: town are certainly in a
bad condition, and need repairs, but
this should not detract from the im
provement of our side-walks. New
bridges in some of the most Handy
sections of tile town will look odd—
the contrast between them and the
siwde-walks will bear a close resem
blance to the aspect presented by a
fiv in a pan of milk, or something oil
that order.
—The entertainment given on the |
last, day of the last year, for the ben- ■
efit of the aged Rev. Jos. H. Baker |
and his afflicted wife, from whom a j
card of thunks appears in this issue,]
furnished an occasion for the develop- i
uicnt of a noble trait in the charac- |
ter of one of our most worthy m -i - j
chants. Seeing a step-son of •he
preacher passing, he called to him.
and stated that he was too moral to
attend a “show,” but felt a desire to
show respect for the venerable old
preacher, and pulled down one of his
most fashionable hats, and handed it
to the step-son, requesting him to 1
present it to the old gentleman as a
token of his good will and respect.
The aforesaid merchant is not a pro
fessor of religion. Ho is reputed to
he a disciple of Darwin, win tiler tru
ly or not we conuot s iv; but this we
do say: This act is well calculated to
i produce a twinge in (he conscience
and a blush on the cheeks of some
niggardly professors of religion,
whom we have seen and known but
too well.

Laborers f.ravin r.
The number of eolore 1 people who j
are leaving this c a:;,!;.' and going to
the adjoining counties oi l'loriua is
increasing every day. Aanl the worst
feature of the whole matter is, those
who are leaving belong almost entire
ly to the laboring or f irtniug cla is.
Almost every hour in the day a wagon
load of darkies can bo seen passing
through town on their way to IF >rida,
where they say they can get better
homes, both r lands, better wages. In
this immediate vicinity t;m negroes
seem disposed to remain where they
are, and are contracting with the 1 nid
owners, but the upper portion of toe
county lias been almost depopulated
of negroes. AVc have met and con
vert ■ and with several who were on their
way to the “Land of Flowers, and
they all deny tl: it they are going in
search of hotter government, or that
politics has anything to do with their
movements wind ever. Some of them
Kav that thev are leaving because the
Grangers are trying to oppress them;
others say they are in search of heti in
lands. The impression seems to pre
vail among the negroes that the
Grangers are resolved upon the re
duction of farm labor, and that they
arc opposed to renting their land to
colored tenants.
AVc know notli'n g of the Grange or
i ganiiation, and can therefore not even
| offer an opinion as to what tlieir ac
| lions or intentions in this particular
can be; but this we do know: the
: farming interests of our county will
ho materially injured unless there is
something done to check the emigra
tion of the negroes,

Rev. .J. S. Baker and Lady ask
leave to tender, through the columns j
of the Rkfoiitke, their grateful ac
knowledgments to the company of i
kind hearted, generous young friends
who undertook, on the last day of tin
last year, (1875) to manufacture a
brilliant In* of sunshine wherewith to]
dissipate their shadowy recollections
of the dark days through which they j
had passed during the expiring year i
—induced by the combined influence
of disease, the infirmities of age ami
their unfortunate condition otimpe-j

add, that the light, they succeeded in ]
generating (in the form of green
backs) by their tableau, charades,
Ac., aided and cheered by a rare com- |
bination of coucording sounds, by;
which they were greeted liv our bands |
lof music, whose services were gratui-j
- tously rendered, and moreover, by:
| the liberal patronage extended to
them by our ayinpat-helie and gener
ous community, succeeded in reviving
cheering recollections of glorious sen- I
sons past, of peace, plentv and pros
perity. For ail of winch we feel that '
thanks are due. not only to the sym
pathetic friends to whom we, have r<-
j ferred, but also to the giver of every
( good and perfect gi*t, who pin into
j their hearts the generous thought to
shed light on the pathway of two of
| their afflicted fellow-mortals, as they
were about to step into the dark un
known of another year —in all proba
bility the last of their sojourn on earth.
We advise our citizens to look out
for horse-thioves. As will be seen in

night near the line of Brooks and

The 14th day of January, 187 b,

i ot Quitman, for on that day one of;
i the greatest shows on the earth will'
| give a grand holiday exhibition to
j our citizens. On that day the famous j
John Robinson's World Reposition
will pitch its tents, and present to tli ■
l public tint vast wonders of a grand
Menagerie, Aquarium and complet
Circus. Old John Robinson's name;
: and fame arc too well known to re
quire much notice, but this season he 1
| Inis gone so far alt ad of nil pr o.- ef

1 indorsement, knowing how well lie
rits it. He seems to spend his
immense wealth with a generous
baud, and has this season lavished
over sixty thousand dollars more
upon his mammoth show, which ha-1
already cost over one million of dol
lars. The intrinsic merit of Lis vast]
concern made him a success, and the j
old adage that “success makes suc
-1 cess” is fully proved by bis life-long
I experience and the liberal iudorsc
j ments of ministers and families, us
well as the public in general. He has 1
lately added several new features to 1
his Caravan, including Giraffes, at:
immense Rhinoceros, Sea Lions,Lab
rador Seals, a giant Ostrich, the lar
| gest performing Elephant in America,!
Asiatic and African Lions, forty new
cages and dens of wild beasts from
every quarter of the globe, and also ,
added many new thorough-bred
j horses to the Circus, and engaged ;
{ some of the best riders and gymnasts ]
iof Europe and America. The entire |
| show is so vast that a pen descrip-j
tion can not do it justice, but we ad
vise the public to go and sec it to- ]
morrow, and the day will be ever after
remembered with pleasure. Tin
grand street parade, which is said to
excel anything ill tho Foiled Slates,
will take place on the morning of the
exhibition.
A Treat.
Last night, just before the hour for
“knocking off” the Rei’drte:: corps, ]
from editor to “devil,” was invited
over to the restaurant of Mr. G. D.
McCall. We have been in the btisi- 1
ness for a number of years, and we
have yet to hear of a single instance
where a knight of the quill or “stick”
either lias gone hack on an invitation
to “take a little something.” By spe-;
eial invitation, therefore, the editor
and printers assembled mound the
hospitable table of Mr. McCall last
night, and the repast which was ■
placed before us would have done
credit to any city restaurant. Mr. M
is prepared to furnish meals at all
hours, and those who give him a call
will invariably be supplied with such
a bill of fare as to be entirely satisfied.
Try it; it will be found both good and
cheap.
