of theirs.

Savannah, Ga., Feb. Ist, 187(1.
fh'nr Urpor/tr: —Leaving homo on
the 0:10 o,clock train last night, ar
rived here safely, but tired and sleepy
about 9 o’clock this morning. Wo
found Savannah in the same place
that we left it a short time ago, but.
like our towns off tho seaboard, it is
“unusually dull for tho season.”
Business being dull, the sporting
and amusement loving portion of the
city have arranged a grand race to
come oft' at tho old Tenbroeck course
two miles out on tho Central railroad
this afternoon. The affair is to he
under tho auspices of, and will ho
rendered interesting by tho Savan
nah Jockey Club, and ns the weather
is most auspicious, an exciting time
is expected.
The case of the State vs. the
Messrs. Bussell and T. J. Shcftall,
indicted for riot, in an attack upon
Col. A. R. Lamar, Solicitor General
of the Eastern Circuit, with which
case most of our readers are familiar,
was brought to trial in the Superior
Court here yesterday, and is still in
course of litigation. Mr. Lamar be-
ing disqualified, an order of the court
was take.i appointing Col. Jas. F.
Flewcllyn, of the Pat aula circuit, to
conduct the prosecution, assisted by
W. T T . Girard, Fq. Much interest
is manifested in the case by the citi
zens of the city, both white and black,
and the court room and gallery have
been closely packed by anxious spec
tators ever since the case was called.
The merchants find hotel keepers

preparations for the annual stock
holders convention of the Atlantic k !
Gulf Railroad, and a general rush of j
the people of our section of country i
I is expected in the city next week.
Wo have had only about three j
hours in which to “look around” for
advertisements and write this hasty
letter, but have succeeded in secur
ing tho cards of a few of the promi
j nont business houses and places of
entertainment, to which we direct
! the special attention of our readers,
I Our former townsman ane. esteemed

ns here, and of course will receive
calls from all our business men when !
they come to tiro city next week.
G. 11. Miinun, successor to our;
old friend S. S. Miller, whose adver- '
tisemeut has had a standing place in j
the columns of the Rreoirn it for ser- j
end years p-st, informs our people i
that ho will be gla.l to have them pay
him a call next week, and our friends'
can do no better anywhere in the city j
if they desire to purchase anything :
in the furniture line.
The Planters and Bresxaxs Euro

preparations for the entertainment of;
the “stock-riders,” and we recom
mend these houses in preference to all
others in the city to our readers.
They are liberal patrons of the coun
try press, and deserve the patronage I
of our people. They make guests j
feel at horns, and do not run so much
on niiih alone. Our country people
like something substantial to eat, and
are not a< custom to licing on style.]
They had rather have something good
to eat and not quite so much of the i
stole. Besides, the time has come
when dollars go further than style with j
our people, and they cannot afford to
pay four dollars a day at what are j
called tin; “first class houses,” merely]
lo be in the style. This will all do well
enough for sick yankees and million
aires, but does not suit either the
tastes or financial condition of our
Southern people.
We are sorry we have not time to
write a more lengthy and carefully
prepared letter, but ns the hour for
the mail to close is at hand, wo must
close.
Yours in great haste,

Mr. John T. Cheatham, Dear Sir.-—The

In picking the cotton we find one hun

recommendation. Your ; in respect,
