, Mr. Editor.—Y6d remember, that on the
89thofAugnst when the Hon. Howell Cobb,
had closed his able and atatesmpn-like ftd-
dresi to .'the citizens of Chattooga county,
that L. We Crook arose and stated that on
. ‘Tuesday week, there would be a barbecue
given id Summerville, and every body were
invited to attend. In'the streets I learned
that John M. Berrien, George M. Troup, and
James M. Smythe, would be there. Welh
the 2d df Sept, came, and with it Jaa. Mitch
ell, Gen. A. K, Patton, S.louche.and the
Rev. Mr. Cowart, wht> were the Berrien,
Troup and Smytbe, on the oconsioni. James
had off, dealing altogether in declamation,
knd undoubtedly the most pleasant speaker
present. , He told his hearers they w ere d/s*
graced and dishonored; yet, he, James, was for
the jZhfqn . He contradicted the statement
• hiade by Mr' Cobb that Col. Stiles voted, us
' he,-Cobb, did on the flagon hill.- He said
that Stiles was in Austria. O I what a pity

was an eloquent and sublime speaker. Here
is a specimen of the “ same sort” that forced
itselftp.my aiind, while the Reverend gon-

<! Look, if you please, at the American Ra
gle. Behold him careering high in the re
gion, of space; with what boldness he sweeps
the vaulted sky, dashing the rain-drops from
his wings; how graceful lie moves in the cir
cle forrii'ed, goring, on the bright orb of day;
how independent his thoughts must be, un
known to sorrow or control. But hark j

Reverend gentleman to a close.
On- the following morning 1 saddled my

friend the day before. After passing the

a spring of “ sparkling water,” and stopping
a few moments to partake of the “beverage,

■ fow moments rest to iny weary animal.—
■jAfter sealing myself beneath the shade, of an
ancient oak, the anecdote of tho three toned

the hill; the bell still calling McDonald, Mc-

the old cow stopped, when she commenced
- lowing, “ used up, used up, used up;” just
at that moment in an opposite direction, 1
heard an innumerable number of voices from
the watery element. I could distictly hear
' the following, Cobb, Cobb, Toombs, Toombs,
Stephens, Stephens, is elected, .is elected.—
Mounting my pony, 1 left this lovely spot, to
seek my place of destination. Tho sun ap
peared to shine more brilliant; the birds to
sing their sweetest song; while the leaves of

TO MISS EUGENIA.
A few months will pass and you’ll,forget
That I oace dwelled on earth ;
A few short months, perhaps you’ll regret
You once thought me full OF worth.
Thoughts may pass of your young heart’s
choice, -
But ah ! Time will prove, you will forget.
Yes, you’ll forget, when other arms twine
Around your sylph-like form,
And your memory will not wander back
To think of him you once ador’d.
A dream of your early love may rise,
A tear may foil, but you will forget

A Fleasing Inoident.
Whilst the President was holding a levee
at the Taylor Hotel, ou the evening of his
arrival at Winchester,(Va.) among the num
erous ladies aud gendemen who hastened.to
pay him their respects, there wus an old man
whoso head was white with the snows of age,
but whose'form was still erect, and whose
eye still wore the brightness of eurlier days.
Advancing to the President; and taking him
by the hand, he snid; “Sir, 1 am one cf the
old soldiers of 1812. Whenever my country
is in dnnger I am ready to servo it again.’,—
The President, greeting him pleasantly,
replied: “ I am alwnja happy, sir, to meet
the old soldiers of 1812, and I know that I
can depend upon them in the hour of need.
It may snfely be asserted that no one who
has borne arms in defence oftheUnion enter
tain for a moment the mad scheme of its dis-
soultion. Architects of the glorious structure,
they know the cost at which it was reared,
aud their downright unwillingness to hear of
its destruction may well be conceived; more
particularly when the danger is not from a
bombardment without, but from those who
threaten to hold the brand over the magazine
within.— Winchester Virginian.

THE CUBA VICTIMS.
An officer ofthe U. S. sioopof war Albany,
which wns nt Havana at the time of the ex
ecution ol Coi. Crittenden’s men, thus de
scribes the scene, in a letter to a friend in
Baltimore. He sriys :
‘The first news nfter the Albany's return,
wns that the ‘Fillibusters, had marched
twolve miles into the country, to the town
of Posa, and there holding firm at tho foot
of tho Cusco mountains, had cut to pieces
two entire companies ofthe Spanish infantry
who had been too much in the advance
when the attack begun. The Spaniards,
having steam at their disposal, had suddenly
thrown two thousand men upon tho devoted
adventurers, but a hloudy repulse followed
Iheir first attack. A thousand more men
were hurried from Havana on Thursday, the
13th. These, also, must liuve gone too near
the Fillibusters, rifles, for they were again
yesterday reinforced by three compnnies, and
last night another steamer went in the same
direction, apparently loaded with troops.—
Tho fact of the large reinforcements being
hurried to the scene of action renders it pro
bnble that there is some ground far the ru
mor that sevesrul hundred Spaniards, among
whome are a very large propotion of officers,
have already fallon. But for all this, the ex
pedition is sealod—for the Cubans, however
free with money and boasts of fight,-will not
handle the musket—thqy do not join tho in
vaders—nnd ihe brave sympathisers, delud
ed first, are already falling a sacrifice. A
horrid story remains for to day: fifty men,
detached by Lopez to gain some town, on
or near the coast, wero captured by tho
Spanish Admiral last night, at 2 o’clock.—
They were brought into Ihe harbor, placed
on board a frigate, end this morning, nt 9 o-
rlock, they marched down the ship’s gang
way, one by one, stripped to the truwsers and
shirt, some even without the latter covering,
bare-headed, hands tightly bound behind their
hacks—a pale train, hurrid by the minions
of despotism towards the land of ghosts.
I say those fifty men—one colonel, three
captnins, four lieutenants, two surgeons, five
saigeants, and thirty-five soldiers—were bure-
lieuded nnd almost naked, bound, marched
down the flag-ship’s gang way, on the side
next to nnd not two hundred and fifty yards
from the Albany, into a ferry-boat, transport
ed to the head of the harbor, distance about
one mile, nnd there, amidst an immense
concourse of spectators—perhaps one hun
dred thousand—shot without mercy ! I saw
their palefaces and firm steps as they descend
ed from their trial to death. Meny were ve
ry young, and some had the forms, ns they
no doubt had the sons, of heroes. Of the
whole party only one was a Cuban, which, of
itself, shows enough of creole Cuba’s patri
otism. Four were Irish, and forty were our
own people, misled, it is true, but doubtless
believing that they were treading in the steps
of Lafayette, end those sympathisers whose
names arc enrolled in glory, in the annnls of
our revolution. But Cuba has not revolted;
there is no war there of the people against
their oppressors, and our own people should
keep aloot, or descend by tens of thousands
to drive tyranny to the land where it is indi
