., Things about Town-
A few evenings since we strolled into the
,’grounds around'the Old Capitnl, to witness
what we were told was to he the “Twelfth
Anniversary ot the Colored Total Abstinence
( Society.” On entering the enclosure a scene
met our view which'we think would have
astonished some of those overflowing philan-
- thropists who waste so much of their sur
plus sympalhjyupon his oppressed condition
of Southern blacks.
A tabid, some filly yards in length, and
upon which, ns we afterward learned, nenrly
two hundred covers were spread, was load
ed, in the amplest profusion, with the choi
cest delicacies, meats, pastry, cukes, &C., all
prewired in the most excellent style. The
table <vns surrounded by four or five hun
dred darkies, all neatly and most of them
stylishly dressed. We saw more than one
colored genim’n” there, whose fine and
fashionable made suit prottotjly oost n larger
sum than would have purchased the whole
of Horace Grcely’s wardrobe* Silks and
satins rustled promiscuously through the
xnowd, nml head dresses ot nlj. - fashion),-
from Queen Elizabeth’* to Queen Victoria’s
were extensively visible at the “ first table.”
Strict order and decorum were observed,
and nflofn full eu,oyment of the good things
spread before them, and listening to a very
pungent speech from one of their most
gifted” temperance “ orators,” they qui-
ViVly di)<pcr.«nd. We hnd almost forgotten to
stnte, (although we by no means neglected
ilntlho tune; that a tnblo amply spread
with excellent cheer, was prepured within
the StntfiJfouM) for the accntnwodtilion of
M inyiufl^uosts.’* Quite a nurtibeof gentle
men, and many of the Indies of our city
wore present, and seemed to enjoy them
selves very much.— Tuscaloosa Monitor.

to the men to Whom has been entrusted the
the management and construction of the

months before the Road is completed and

Ruined Again I
We hnvc never known a people who could
survive so hinny “ruinations” as the people
•> of the A'outh. Last year, when the Georgia
elections went against tho disunionists, we
were told that “ the doom of ihe South was
sealed—thut she was bound hand and loot,
delivered to her enemies ” In August last,
when Alabama look her stand upon the Geor

the South was ruined again, v urse ruined
than ever; and now, when Mipsissjpi litis no
bly given her voice for tho Union, and has
placed her Foolt upon the prostrate ndvocatei

oured by the “Secession” Bangers' Adver-
lizers, Registers: nnd Observers, that the nw-
fui event has conic upon us at last, nnd that
tho suulh is mined, this time and no mistake !
Isn’t it strange, nay almos miraculous, that
tho South, nfier having been “ruiucd”so often
should still he ill such a pinspernus condition.;
