A Desperate Villain—Fatal Aflhlr.
A negro slave belonging to Col. John Bro
ward, of this county, named Belfast, having
committed some tliefla and other depredations
about Christmas, took to ' the hush," Include
punishment. Frem that tlmu up to lnst ( Sa
turday night a regular system of thieving and.
robbing was carried on by Belfost and ano
ther runaway, whom he Itnd Induced to join
him. On last Saturday evening Col. Broward,
having been Informed by soma fkithfol nc-
gr- cs that Belfost and his asanctate would
make a vMt-tn his plantation that same night
touk Immediate steps to secure their arrest.
He and his two sons, armed with shot guns,
and two trusty negro slaves John and Brutus,
concealed themselves Where It was known the
runaways had to posa. They soon ap|ieared
and Col. B. called on thorn to surrender or lie
would shoot them. -Thoy Immediately'turn
ed and fled, pursued liy the whole party.—
Brutus Brat overtook Belfast: As soon as lie
laid his hand upon him the villain quickly
and unex|icctcilly drew a long sharp pointed
butcher knife, with which he Inflicted what
is considered a mortal wound on Brutus, Thu
knife penetrated deep In tile region of the If
ver and nearly the whole of the bowels pro.
traded from tho wound. The negro John
nuxt canto up with the desperado, and hail
scarcely seised him by tho collar when he re
ceived Ills death-wound I The weapon on'
tcred the chest between the. cullar-bqne aud
the first rib, ami took a direct inn for live in, he<
toward tlio heart dividing tlio main arteries
and producing almost instantaneous death,
The two sons of Col Broward were now Id
immediate danger, the .murder brandishing
his bloody knife, while their gun, from some
cause, would not go off But fortunately at
this moment, Col . B. himself ail'ived and end'
ed the villain’s eareor by blowing Ilia braius

a friend In that city:
"I embrace the opportunity to say that we
all arrived Bafe on the shores of Africa and all
in good health. It would nut be worth while
to take up time to say much about the fruits
of Africa. I can only say to my colored
friends tlint they will have to come and see
for themselves. I know that I'have seen as
well as any body, and 1 Imvo seen for myself;
and I do say that .Africa Is my homo and I am
not disappointed, I will not say that Afrlcu
