In response to a letter from the Cap
tains ef the different companies in At¬
lanta, asking Governor Smith to issue
a call, ordering a military encampment
in Atlanta sotnc time in July or Au¬

Executive Dumrtment,
State of Ge' roia, >
Atlanta, June 6, 1874. )
Captains John A. Kitten, W. If.
Weems and John L. Conley, Atlanta:
Gentlf.mfn— Your letter of the Jst
instant, in which you say that “it would
be of great, benefit to the volunteer
forces of the State to have them meet
in some central encampment, organize
is brigade, or brigades," Ac , and sug
gesting that I order such compatiua as
l “may deem best to meet in Atlanta
in July or August,'’ tor the purpose
mentioned, has been received.
After duly considering your sugges¬
tion, I find myself obliged to decline
issuing the order which yon ieque*t.
If any member of the volunteer com
panics in the State desire to meet iu
encampment L would not hesitate to
consent th >rcto ; tut l would not le
warranted in issuing an order, such as
you request. It would not be porper
ut present to make the meeting com
pnlsory. The companies desiring to
assemble in encampment may be per
initted to do so ; but othorp who could
not attend without great inconvenience
or loss should be left to exercise their
discretion in the matter. The time
and place suggested for the encamp¬
ment are suitable, and if any portion of
the companies should conclude to meet
it will afford me great pleasure to do all
in my power to make the occasion a
pleasant one to tl etu.
