Education ol’ the Bine it n,
and Why?
Eiiitohs Tlmks and Planter: —
From the sphere of our ow n obser¬
vation, which is eon lined chiefly to
tins middle and lower ranks of socie¬
ty, we are led to the conclusion that
a majority of the wlule race in this
immediate section of the State arc
opposed to the plan of dispensing
even a liberal education to the frccd
mon among us.
The objection most generally
urged by ome to educating the ne¬
groes under the frec-seliool system
is, that the colored children will
llius be receiving a greater amount
of the benefit of the school fund,
while the whites, who are the prop¬
erty holders, will be forced to pay
by taxation almost the entire sum to
keep np this fund, lint, notwith¬
standing this may be true in part,
while we have them with us,—and
there is not the remotest probability
of getting rid of them soon,—at any
rule let us contribute to their mental
and moral training, imitating the
example of the kind lady on the
railway coach, who being requested
by a heartless prostitute mother to
hold her bundle a moment till she
Yvent to the rear to get a drink of
water but never returned, upon open¬
ing the package and finding it to
contain a living infant, for lnunnm
ty *s sake could do nothing else than
take the little foundling to her home
and provide for it.
Still another party, no less mtmor
uU '’ lor "' h being ' ; opposed " lUil Hie !’ y
y. to open
ing of schools for ti c blacks: they
contend that the i gricuRural inter
est will sutler by ii. and, if educated,

A Beautiful Sentiment.
Shortly before his departure for
India the lamented Jleber preached
a sermon, in which was the follow¬
ing:
“Life bears us oil like the stream
of down a mighty river. Our boat glides
the narrow channel—through—,
the borders. playful The murmuring of their its grassy
trees shed blos¬
soms over young heads, and the
Dowers on the brink seem took*,
themselves iiappy in to our young hands; wo
are the hope, and grasp us—but. eagerly
at beauties around the
stream hurries and still our bands
arc empty. Our course in youth and
manhood" is amid objects more strik¬
ing and magnificent. Wo are uni
mated at the moving pictures of en¬
joyment and industry that are pass¬
ing us; we are excited at homo by a
short-lived disappointment. The
stream bears us on, and our joys and
griefs are alike lelt behind us. Wo
may be ship wrecked; we cannot bo
delayed. Whether rough or smooth
the river hastens to its home, until
the roar of Hr ocean is in our ears,
and the tossing of the waves is be¬
neath our feet, and the land lessens
