TOtt. THE PUBLIC INTELLIGENCER. TO *iOUISA. Enchanting maiden , ‘echo can view thy char,ns, And check a whir to fold thee in his arms ? Cupid his vivil heps within thine eye, And all around his poison’d arrows fly. 7by form celestial, all the beauties grace, And wry charm is centred in thy face. Thy auburn curls, which in luxuriance grow, With study’d negligence o’sr thy shouldersflow. Thy Ire: t, the seat of rapturous delight, Jirjetls its coldness, but as snow it white — As that discclvmg, down the valllcs run, To streams converted, by tie potent sun ; £.l das thy heart inciting tear-drops flow. Dissolv'd in pity, hflthe tale of woe. And oh 1 nvheneerttic tears of feeling flow, Adozun that cheek of such transcendant glow —- Within, rr.y mind no jaster semllav.ee gro:.s, Than would thy cheek be to the blooming rose ; And the pure tears, which thy fair cheek suffuse, Would hear a likeness to the vernal Jews ; So that thy ch.-li when moisten’d with the tear, Would like a rose, wish due drops hi v’d, appear. No thoughts impure that genii: bosom swell, Though loves in ambush thfre delighted dwell. Candid and frank, devoid cj every art, Thou'id lovelier still, sweet vidress of my heart, lathis S that yon, and you alone, appear To be unconscious l hat you are so flair. Then who car. view such ripe, AttraShv charm , Tit chech a wish to fluid thee i a his arms ’’ C h! hve.y virgin, who car: hear thy voice, And or to love, or not, retain the choice ? 2oy gentle asserts are the seed of love, Sweet as the strains, which raptur’d r. j 1 ‘y Jove, From thy soft tongas into the heart tig, flow, They’re gustily root, and soon luxuriant grow : Dir/iptur’d hearts, Lite's wran reuspovt'r, then feel, And prostrate captives at thy altar Inee). Thy form is beauty, all thy heart's refin’d, Aid richly cultur’d- is thy virgin mind ; From Rome’s and Greece’s literary store, With cars you’ve gather’d all the useful ore. Knowledge profound, join’d with a heart so pure, I, Just admiration, and must live secure— Then who can see. dear maid, thy beauteous form, Which ev’ry grace contributes to adorn— Who can behold thy form and net admire, Who ean behold is and not feel desire ? And ah ! wbodl hear thy tongue in accents sweet, Drove that thy mind, with knowledge, is replete, And, like thy form, tloc common herd above, Tet still continues ignorant of LOVE. €>h ! if poor mortal e'er could f erf At le, Then syre perfection we behold in thee— As Venus lovely, lih: Concordia mild Nature form’d thes—thou'ri Minerva’s chill.
