AN INDIAN TALK ! 1
We mentioned in car fell number
the return of the melTengers who weie
dispatched by the acting governor, to
afeertain the disposition of the Indians
afiernblcd at Greenville and Fort
Wayne. On Saturday morning lad,
the governor, attended by Blue Jack
et, a Chief of the Shawnee nation, with
three other Chiefs, entered the Court
houfc, and were engaged in- a talk til]
very late in the afternoon.
The manly, firm, and majestic de
portment cf these hardy fans of na -
jiurc, were well calculated, from the
(recent alarms, to attract the attention
‘of the citizens. Valt crowds (locked
to the Court-honfe, led thither by cu
riosity, and the novelty cf hearing an
Indmn adcirefs. Their manners were
familiar, una{fuming and engaging.—■
Their delivery was cool, dispassionate
and rational. They frequently ap
pealed to the Great Spirit, the author,
of their exidcnce, For the rettitude of
their intentions, and the truth of what
they advanced. We were not pre
pared to takedown the debate, which
we should ha /c done, had wc been ap
prised that those whole duty it was,
would have nt-glce'ed it.
It will be impra-ilicable for us to
■five into ail the various cattles which
have produced the recent alarms on
uur frontiers ; there cxiit a cause, and
it v.ill be our endeavor to fathom it.
This we are to do from the fubflance
of what palled i:j the course cf the in
terview, It appears that the Shaw trees*
Wyandois, Potawaiomies, 7 a was,
Chippiwas, Winncpaus, Malominefe,
Malockefe, Secawgoes, and one man
from the north of Chippiwas, have as
femblcdin the neighborhoodof Green
ville. The aifentblage of so many
different nations of Indians within the:
jurisdifilon cf this (late, their object
unknown, was Sufficient to create very
Serious alarms. But their motive for
affembiirsg was this—The Indians
within the boundary of the northern
Lakes, a:, far back as they were known
towards the Pacific, from thence across
to the Miffifippi, and down the fame
toils j-mtiion with tfie Ohio, had
formed an union to adhere to one of
the chiefs of the Shawnee nation,
whofc ehdeavor it was, to infill] in
their minds the principles of moral
philosophy ; he having, it is said, by
infpiraiicn, difeovered the (alien (late
of man, wiflieri to inculcate those prin
ciples which would “ tend to their pre
sent welfare and future huppincis.”—
Ihe nations within the boundary fpe>
ctfied, fired with the desire of uniting
as one, and attached to the principles
inculcated by the prophet, had (with
a few exceptions) come to a relolution
to put,fire Iv.s wholeidme admonitions,
she chiefs of the nations who did not
come into this meaiurc, fdon found
-iiemfelvcs dripped of their fuhjetfls,
and only a few remained with them;
itv/as observed by ove of the orators,
