DR. BENJAMIN” TRANK
LIN,
HIILOSOPIJICAT., POLITICAL, AND
LITERARY.
Uominum rerumquc refer tor.
This edition will be published
from the copies revised arid cor
rected Dr. Franklin, the cor
rections of which arc ‘ , the hand
writing of the author, ami mav
be seen by any gentleman in the
possession of thu editor of the
.Aurora.
The publication of the writ
ings of I>. Franklin in a com
plete edn , was long contem
plated by the late Benj. Frank-
V v cache, his grand-son who
• scribed the copy which was
devised to Mr. W. Ten;pie
Franklin, for publication. It was
originally- designed to publish
that corrected ed/tion in three
languages, & in England, Ger
many, France, and America,at
the same time ; this expectation
was frustrated bv the dwisee (W
Temple Franklin who it is as
st rtec. with great apparent proba
bility, sacrificed the work and
the honorable trust reposed in
him, for money, to the mortal ha
tred of the English Ministry a
gtinst the deceased sage.
As soon as this fact was known,
the etlifor of ihe Aurora turned
bis attention to the ceilection of
every paper and circtimstance f
which could tend to preserve and
do honor to the memory of a man
to whom particularly America
owes so much, and who, as he
was among the first who reflected
back lustre to his native country,
must continue to be ranked to
the latest posterity, among its
greatest benafactors and orna
ments.
I', a fly admiration of Dr. Frank

It; ic'a of the materials that
count be obtained, after the sa
crifice of the work bv the devisee,
With some industry, arid with
some expense the editor has pos
cessed himself, not only of the
copy with the corrections and
additions in Dr. Franklin’s hand
writing ; but also of several arti
cles which have never appeared
in any former collection, and of
some w hich have never appeared
ia prim.
Pr< posals would have appeared
long since in this city, had not an
advertisement of an imended e
dition, been publisher; in the I n~
glish prints j the present editor
thought it might be possible that
the edition advertised was that
winch Mr. Temple Franklin was
entrusted with ; but it new ap
pears that the English edition is
oily n new addition of the for
mer compilation with some small
additions ; but still deficient, on a
comparison with the correct pa
-pers in the hands of the editor.
‘i’lie whole will now be carefully
collated, and the work executed
in a style worthy of the great pa„
triarc | cf American liberty and i
ftp',stie of the American press. j
The additional papers will form !
•t least * volume, per haps more—- !
the authentic papers already j
printed, form three , and it is
intended to begin with the se
cond volume, which will be put
to pres* immediately, and to pub -
lish the biography, last, so that
Mich additional particulars as
may throw any useful light on the
fife of this great man, may be en
grafted on tiie memoir ;to ob
tain which and other important
materials, the editor will spare
neither pains nor expence.
Gentlemen who may be pos

lender public . service by
’ i iutiicaiing them to the tdi-
CONDITIONS.
The work shall be elegantly
printed, on anew small pica
type and pale vellum paper in

with numerous engravings, a

length portrait from the best like -
