THE WORKS

DR. BENJAMIN IRANK

PHILOSOPHICAL, POLITIC AX, AND
literary.
Jluminvm rerun qvt repcrtoi ’•
This edition will be published
from the copies revised and cor
rected by Dr. Franklin, the cor
rtcctions of which are in the hand
vniticg of the author, and may
be seen by any gentleman i the
|;osßesßion ol’ the editor ol the
.Aurora.
The publication of the writ
ings of Dr. Franklin in a com
plete edition, wit long contem
plated by the late Benj. Frank
lin Beache, his grand-son who
. transcribed the cepv which was
deviled to Mr. W. Temple
Franklin, for publication. It was
originally designed to publish
that, corrected ed/tion in three
languages, & in .England, Ger
many, France, and America,at
tlie same time ; this expectation
was frustrated by the dtvisee (VV
Temple Franklin who it is as
tried with great apparent proba
bility, sacrificed the work and
the honorable trust reposed in
linn, lor money, to the mortal ha
tred of the English Ministry a
geinst the deceased rage.
As soon as this fact was'known,
the editor of ihe Aurora turned
his attention to ilie collection ol
every paper and circumstance
which could ‘end to preserve and
do honor to the memory ol a man
to whom particularly America
owes so much, and who, as he
was among the first who reflected
Lack lustre to liisnative country,
must continue to be tanked to
the latest posterity, among its
greatest benafactois and ot na
me nts.
Early admiration of Dr. Frank
lin ; Educated in veneration and
reverence ot his character &
other incidental circumstances
riot necessary to bt, pointed out,
have Concurred to Tavor the col
lection of the best materials that
could be obtained, after the sa
ciifice of the work bv the devisee.
With some industry, and with
some expense the eUi'or has pos
gessed himself, not only ol the
copy with the corrections and
additions in Dr. Franklin's hand
writing ; but also of several arti
cles w hich hare never appeared
in any former collection, and of
some which have never appeared
in print. f
Proposals would have appeared
long since in this city, had not an
advertisement of an intended e
dition, been published in the En
glish punts i the present editor
thought it might be possible that
the edition advertised was that
which Mr. Temple Franklin was
entrusted wiih ; but it now ap
pears that the English edition is
•only anew addition of the for
mer compilation with some small
additions ; but still deficient, on a
comparison with the correct pa
nels in the bands of the editor.
The w bole will now becarefully
collated, and the work executed
in a style wot thy of the great pa
triarch es American liberty and
cpo'tle of the American press.
Tlw additional papeis wdl form
at least a volume,perhaps more—
the authentic papers already
printed, form three , and it is
intended to begin with the se
cond volume, which w ill be put
to press immediately, and to pub
lish the biography last, so that
t-uci, additional particulars as
way throw any useful light on the
lilt of tins great man, may be en
£ af’ied on the memoir ;to ob
tain which and other important
mateintls, the editor will spare
neither pains nor txpence.
